187 Million Muslims - the next big threat?
« Reply #15 on: October 31, 2005, 05:21:17 PM »
This is so simple.

Have the UN go in, and give all these misunderstood extremist Muslims sensitivity training, and then Australia and all the rest of the Pac rim countries should just try and be more tolerant.

See you just need the UN to come fix this. They can fix anything
.

Indonesia?

Things are starting to warm up with extremists over there. Just recently theres been more bombings, 3 Christian school girls were beheaded (age 16-19), and the people responsible for the Bali bombings have been getting time off their sentences under the pretence of some muslim holiday.

If Indonesia slips over into the extremist state, which is the way things are heading, we'll see a nation with 3 x as many muslims as Iran on the doorstep of Australia. Australia and Indonesia have always had "tense" relations, and the USA is a defence "partner" with the Aussies.

Are you guys (US) aware of this emerging threat and what do you think of it?

Huh.. its nothing new... they had sort of civil war with Aceh rebels for quite a long time.

Tsunami caused pause in conflict and since tsunami, media are more focused on conflict.

soon to be posted by Lada

This is a missportrayal of muslims by the western media.  You see I found one news source that says it like it is......that's right just one and it said these people are not muslims let alone extremests.  No they simply fight for freedom.  These girls were not beheaded out of spite they were executed in accordence with muslim.....err I mean regional law.  After all they are not muslims at all.   We all know it's putin and booshes fault.

I lived in Indonesia for a number of years in the early 90's.

I would say that despite the country's best efforts the place is really a bunch of seperate islands with very different cultures and beliefs. In some parts they are very muslim and in other parts not at all.

The government had this stupid transmigration program where they moved people from overcrowded Java to all over the archipeligo to try to give poor people land and spread the religion around and also protect the Javanese government power base by spreading out people who would support it.

Now you have pockets of people from Java in places that the local people hate them and the potential for conflict is high. Things like that school girl killing happen and if it were not for the army the local non muslim population would wipe some of the transmigration towns off the map.

I would say the chances of the whole place becoming another Iran is very remote. If it started to become extremist it would probably decend into a civil war.

Vulcan, back when the men were men and all the sheep in New Zealand were also, there was an old game called Harpoon II.. a real-time force simulator built over scenario baselines. One of 'em was Indonesia on a Wespac build. Ran it over three days..   All them damn islands...

You need a lotta ordanance.

Habu, what would your guess be as to any official reaction to the killing of those girls?  Is there a reliable government capable of acting in any way to bring any sense of justice to the victims families or is it just business as usual in that part of the world?

I agree to some extent. What concerns me is this is the environment the extremists seem to thrive in.
