The added benefit is that you can pause it and go piss. Movie was about 45 minutes too long, IMHO.

I liked Open Range... only problem is during the gunfight it seemed like everyones revolver was at least a 12 shooter.  But that seems a problem common to Hollywood.  The light sabers in Starwars would have discharged much more quickly than depicted given the Alderaan technology of the era.

As for parallels to modern political thought I can see how Kostner and Duvall could be viewed as depicting free traders while the Irishman running the town was in favor of protectionist government trade policies.  His buying the government and forcing the people to bow to unreasonably high beef prices shows the corrupting influence of election financing.

Open Range is good, well worth it IMO.

If you like Duval, Second Hand Lions is awesome IMO.

Secondhand Lions is terrific.  One of the few movies I like that I can also recommend to my parents, without hesitation.

Holden, that's an interesting take on the symbolism.  I figured somebody would come up with a different one than mine.   I also thought more than one person would think I was nuts, asserting there is no such thing as symbolism in movies...

I do think I saw Costner reload several times during the gunfight though.  I was really unprepared for the way the fight started - I thought that was very atypical of a Hollywood fight.    Thought it was great though.

Yeah that was a great movie.

There were alot of good parts in that movie. When Costner blows the sign apart over the bar with, or when he walks up to that smurfy assasin dude in the street towards the end of the movie... "You the one that shot our friend?.... Bang!"

Or when Sue is being held by one of the Sheriffs' men and costner comes around the side of the buildings walks up and pumps his colts into his gut with little hesitation. hehe.

costner is not a good actor in my book... he was a decent fit for this movie tho.

Oboe...  all I got out of it was that individual human rights should trump government and that the only way you can get such fairness is by the right of the people to keep and bear arms.

An underlying point is that to be a nation of free men and riflemen you got to be good with the damn things and you don't get good unless you own and use the things and have the will to do so.

Agree 1000%. In fact, anything Duval is associated with gets bumped up a notch automatically. He's the coolest actor around. Not yer typical Hollywood twit.

Great movie, recommend anyone who enjoys westerns to watch it. If you have purchased at least 1 rap album in the last month you probably should just rent Red Dawn or The Warriors and enjoy some innocent killing movies instead..

I thought you would like it more than that.   I thought the protagonists' values of honesty, hard work, self-reliance, respect for other people and the willingness to fight for what's right would resonate with you and make it one of your favorites.  Plus, revolvers galore!

Are we a nation of free men?   Or are we more like the townfolk?

We are more like the towns folk, but not because evil republicans controll everything.

Because evil politicians on BOTH sides sold us out for more power.

I think you are probably right about this.    When a person stereotypes like I did in that case there are bound to be in inconsistencies.   Plenty of good republicans and evil democrats exist I'm sure.

The thing that struck me as Democrat-like about the townspeople is their nameless mediocrity and dependence.   Nobody would stand up as they were getting walked all over - they just sortof cowered and thought only of protecting their families.

The Republican-like qualities of the rancher - well, wealth obviously - but also the use of conflict to gain power, the subversion of public offices for personal ends, the selfishness and greed.

And of course that left all the good qualities for the Libertarian heroes.   It's my bias showing, pure and simple.

But, the Republicans do control the White House, the Senate, the House of Representatives, and soon the Supreme Court.

Are there successful Libertarian politicans anywhere?
