I toured the B-17G Texas Raiders today!
« on: August 04, 2000, 02:59:00 PM »

A buddy of mine was sitting at OSU Don Scott airport here in Columbus waiting to pick someone up. (Famous golfer, Dublin Ohio, figure it out  )  He called me to tell me how there is a old airplane sitting at the airport and it has guns sticking out of it.  I asked him how old it was and he said "really old and it's painted dark green".

This is about 1400 but lucky for me the boss left at 1300 so I sneak away and make the 5 min drive to the airport and there sits the Teaxs Raiders.  The first time I had ever seen one.  I couldn't believe it.  I paid my $5 and took the walk through.

I could not believe how small and cramped it was.  I had heard stories from my great-Uncle who was a ball turrent gunner about how cramped it was but I had no idea.  This was even with the top turrent seat mechanism thingy gone.  Me being 6'2" doesn't help.  I had no idea that the rear gunner could not move through the main fuselage.

Understand that 100% of my aircraft knowledge is from PC sims.  But I thought that this aircraft would have been bigger.  Every simulation that I have seen that had a B-17 in it made it seem that everything was bigger.  AH included.  Looking out the pilot windows I couldn't believe how short the wingspan was and how close the engines were to the fuselage.  Is it me?

I watched the crew work on the #4 engine for a while before I left for fear of getting fired.  They were having some sort of pressure problem that they wanted to get it fixed and it was pushing back there taking off time.  Hopefully I can get back there at 1700 and see them get airborne.

The Raiders were in Edmonton last year and the year before..........unfortunately i couldn't get out to see it!!

Last year there was a Hiekel here with the B-17.....I too was amazed at how small they seemed.

On holidays I went to southern Alberta and in a small town there is a Lancaster museum with a Lanc you can get up close and personal with.

Mickey , the pilots seat are really small aren't they , in fact that whole cockpit of B17 pretty damned cramped .

Was in a B25 too , thats a little bigger .

They had a F4 sitting across from the B17 we went into and that was if not bigger at least the about the same size . Makes u wonder at it all don't it .

cheers spro

The guys with Texas Raiders are really nice, helped us a time or two.  Just recently some of um put alot of work on one of our engines.  Speaking of cramped, I have put on a ton of weight since I left the Air Force and find it damn near impossible to get work done inside the cockpit of the B-25.  Crawling through the tunnel to the nose is truly impossible.  I almost got stuck in there on the way to an airshow once, talk about scarey.

lol u too right Dnil , I passed on the tunnel in Old Glory B25 we went into (looked like a one way mission to me ). But reaper made it ok , damn thing was I had two pictures left on my camera and when we had them developed they didn't turn out   , one of him out the cockpit window other in the nose .

Still I think the cockpit of the B25 was larger than a 17 , the seats in the 17 we went into almost were pea pad sized , hehe .

cheers spro

Off and on, not as much as I would like to.  Work is way to demanding for me to get out more then once a month or so.  With Collings Foundation West.
