Film request: Great fights in f4u's.
« on: November 02, 2005, 12:30:58 AM »
I'm trying to learn the F4us lately. I've seen some folks do some wonderful things in them. I have a crappy twisty stick, so I know some of the torque-related and rudder-related tricks I'll never master, but I've been having a little fun in the F4u1D.

I'd like to request some films of people at their very best in the f4u1d. Be they duels or being gang banged or just beating a superior plane I'd like to see the films.

Bah take the F4U1  :D

If you want some time fighting in them, give me a holler, we'll set one up in the DA or TA.  I'm certainly nowhere near that great in them but it's my favorite ride and I have been taught a few tricks before.  Who knows, maybe I could help you out.  The time in there certainly will :aok

Tonight or Friday would be the best times.

dittos on the F4u1, its by far the best of them.  I have great luck in it even against Spit V's as long as I have some verticle to play with.

From memory it's only about 20mph faster, and I thought it had less gas, the -D-C's had wing tanks, right?

The -1 seems to have far better range. Much better knife fighter!

I will have to try that... I've just seen more F4u1Ds than 1As, so I figured I'd start there. The u4 is much better suited to chasing down lalas, it seems (but then it's got a FAR stronger engine)

The F4U1 has, as stated above, by far the best range.  It does have wing tanks, and you'd do well to drain them first.  It's also a suprisingly quick bird when up to speed, and can give Lala's a run for their money if you have a bit of alt to start with.  What's more, when you've caught the Lala, you've got a tremendous dogfighter to deal with it.

F4U-1 = good at 15-20k, also SLIGHTLY faster on the deck than the -1D...does carry more fuel, however I've found the cockpit views make gunnery more difficult, it is however a bargain at 40 ENY

maneuverability is slightly better than the 1D given equal fuel load (gallons not %)

the -1 engine is WEAKER than the -1D, so speed suffers at 25k, and acceleration is not quite as good at most alts as the -1D

F4U-1D = I'd rather have this one above 20k compared to the -1, gunnery is easier and visibility is better.  Acceleration is slightly better at most altitudes, and of course it carries a lot of stuff.

F4U-1C = worst performing...heavier, and slower than the -1D, but Hizookas with 900 rds...

F4U-4 = I fly for a reason...

I think the reason you see less f4u-1, is due to visibility.  Lots of big bulky bars around your gunsight, which makes shooting more of a task.

I'd have to agree with ya on this assumption......for the most part

since most fights are going to happen under 10K,  or if you are at 20K you will end up on the deck if you in a good fight. You be better suited to be in a -1.

burn your wing tanks first ( best to burn these on climb out, burn left tank , then right tank, then burn the DT until you ready to get in the action)

also you be better suited to trim out your elevator some where around level flight 290 to 310 mph ( easy way is to go into nose dive hit CT, when you hit your desired speed turn CT off ) best estimated guess is to have the RED tab inline with the bottom of the L where the Elevator Trim tab is as follows

E
L   <------Red bar inline with bottom of the L
V
( no aileron or rudder input when obtaining your Trim setting )

anyhow, this is what has always worked best for me, in being able to wrench all I can out of my vertical climbs, scissors, etc........ and it is a beautiful site to behold when you can out ANGLE  2 spitfire V's  and leave them wondering how did you do that?

also, sometimes just load 50% and a DT, burn DT until you ready to fight, once you drop it, you be on main tank, wing tanks be empty, and you have excellent roll rate in the F4U-1

Yup Yup... TC since your initial training session I have worked go become a u1 Jedi master... :)

50% and DT is standard.

And to your point... I love nothing better than squealing up a spit V in my f4u... Most Spitty pilots look at an f4u as easy meat, its a bunch of fun using the f4u1 to mess up their "easy kill".
