Well it IS an icebreaker after all :)

One of the smallest of our icebreaker fleet but also one with the most sophisticated technology allowing it to stay in position with 25cm (less than 1ft) accuracy using watertanks for balance and azipods for movements.
Also 160 metric ton crane compensates vertical movement automatically, "moonpool" at the center of the vessel and 15MW power from 6 diesels.
Speed 8 knots in 60cm ice and 15 in open sea.

Finnish multipurpose icebreaker sails for Gulf of Mexico

11.11.2005 at 11:17

MSV Botnica, a multipurpose icebreaker owned by Finstaship has sailed for the Gulf of Mexico, the Finnish state shipping enterprise said in a statement Friday.

Finstaship has chartered the vessel to Oceaneering International, a company based in Texas, to support operations to repair the damage caused by hurricane Katrina. Most of the work is to be carried out for Shell, a customer of Oceaneering.

MSV Botnica is expected to arrive in Galveston on 29 November. The 90-day charter contract is worth about 5 million US dollars, or 4.27 million euros.

The designation "MSV" means it's "Multipurpose Support Vessel" and the hull is specially designed to give it better roll resistancy in open seas than ordinary icebreakers.

Nice PDF-info about the vessels from the manufacturer:

It's precision 'position keeping' ability is gonna be critical for ocean floor wellhead repairs, reworks and reconnects for the offshore drilling platforms i'd guess...

Thanks Finland!

Wouldn't it of been cheaper to just give every US male citizen between the age of 16-22 a broad from your country?

Inspired by aviation history, the U.S. Coast Guard recently unveiled it's new "Twin Pig".

Since Finland pretty much freezes up completely in winter I think the question should be; are there any Finnish ships that are not icebreakers?

Hehe good point Holden, I just couldn't imagine them sending a standard icebreaker for relief efforts if they have a more sea-worthy vessel in the arsenal.   It would be like the UK with its cache of guns sending the US a knife, but considering they only have knifes to work with its a nice gesture.
