Craigslist apartment listings
« on: November 28, 2005, 12:49:39 PM »
My wife and I own an apartment building, and we're having a unit come up empty.  I posted an ad on craigslist last night, and predictable as clockwork, I received the usual Africa email:

Every time we post an ad, we get extremely suspicious mails from Africa that offer to rent the apartment, with the assurance that the person renting will be paying for their rent in advance with money orders, or that their corporation will be paying ALL EXPENSES (it's often all caps like that).  This particular one (and maybe two of the others) have included attached headshots of models, probably from some photo collection.

I've stopped being polite, and thought you might find the brief thread interesting.

My response:

>Ben Hallert wrote:

>being able to rent to you. The pictures of some generic model you
>have included are pretty, but irrelevant to housing decision of

>Regards,

>Ben

After I sent it, I spent a few minutes wondering about the legions of scammers at their keyboards and what leads them to this.  I then received this terse:

>From: susan martyns
>Date: Nov 28, 2005 10:37 AM
>Subject: Re: Apt Needed!!!
>To: ben@vipmail.com

>thanks anyway for your concern.take care

Usually, they don't bother replying.  In the 4-5 of these I've corresponded with, I've never received an outraged "How dare you suggest I am a scammer!" response, which I find fascinating.

I haven't read about this anywhere else, but I know I can't be the only one encountering this.  Thought I'd mention it here for y'alls amusement/info.

Yeah, I follow 419 eaters once in a while, just never saw this specific scam.  It's definately an offshoot.  It's interesting how it's targetted at appt owners.

Amazingly enough, I posted a sign in the front yard last month for another unit and had a call that evening.  Sometimes lotech creations work too.  :D

Edit: Made the sign out of PVC, basic T then glued a standard 'For Rent' sign to it.   Fast, cheap, and used supplies I had on hand from the costumes.

People try to 419 scam large parts orders from dealerships all the time.

Never heard of it being done with apartments. Not sure how that would even work.

I'm guessing that they would send a big money order, probably too much, then ask you to refund them the difference.  Or "my company is to be sending you the amount for FULL RENT and DEPOSIT, plus monies for food.  Please be paying to the following accounts for FOOD and local expenses as favor.  THANK YOU!  In return for favor, please be keeping %20 of amount for yourself as conveneince fee!!!'

There's always an angle.

What they are doing is sending you a fraudulent check, you cash it and send them the real money, leaving you to pay back what whas stolen.

I own two other properties that I am renting, and I often get these messages.

I state simply that I am a real estate attorney and any attempt to collect ...yada yada yada...will lead to prosecution.

After that disclaimer, I never hear back from them.

I have had better success posting locally than on the net anyway.

You tell them Chair!  Post more of the angry responses please.  I love reading hate mail.
