A bit more color on a Spit XVI skin idea
« on: November 23, 2005, 10:50:33 PM »
This is a surviving combat vet Spit that is in the Manston museum.  It's a Spitfire XVI of 403 Squadron.

I did a profile, kinda quick, to show the colors.  THe outlined codes, red white and blue nose, the lion insignia, name and kills, along with the painted out tail band at least give it some variety.

Kev or any of the other Spit skinners might want to take a shot.

More info on TB752 found here:

Quick preview of last XVI I will do.
Obviously will redo the weathering/chips to be different to the other one.

Very nice Kev.

A couple of shots of the bird during wartime.  I did the "Val" yellow based on the one photo.  It clearly doesn't look white like they've done on the restoration.  Also interesting on the other photo is the lack of painted out tail band.  Not sure what the deal is on that as they had evidence of the painted out tail band during the restoration.

Top photo gives an idea of the wing root weathering on it too

Could be because from June - Sep 1944 they were part of 2TAF.
No tail bands, but would have the 4 color roundel on the upper wings.

Found this pic - why would have red patches over non-existant 303 positions?

Why red patches over nonexistent guns? Well most likely because the gun ports are still there. The wing could take 4x303s if I recall, they just never did historically. Probably to block out the hole and decrease drag.

Or maybe the museum saw the holes and knew other spits did it.... but I tend to have higher opinions of museum staff.

I think it comes down to the museum guys missed it.  E wing was not set up for 303s.  And it's entirely possible that the wings on the restored TB752 aren't the originals.

A photo of another XVI from the same time and same squadron shows the yellow leading edge and no red.  I'd leave em off.

Most definately 2 TAF, but again if you look at the wartime photo of TB752 I posted it doesn't appear to have the yellow or white on the upper wing roundel.  Apparently this wasn't done universally although it should have been.  Could be the 403 guys didn't take the time.  She had been with 66 Squadron until suffering an accident.  She then went to 403 on April 19, 1945 and was with them til the end of the war.

Would be nice to get RF-M back for the F.IX at some point too. Just a quick heads up. :)

Kinda think this is the Polish Spit we need on the FIX :)

Something about that name just begs to be in AH

New one with new weathering/chips etc.
One thing you can't really see is that I reduced the width of the white stripe on the spinner. I originally did them as your profile, but the pics show the white was narrower than the red and blue stripes.
