I have a ATI X700 pro with 256 MB of ram.

I have had nothing but grief since the last version 2.6 came out.  Lots of stutters a 1 to 2 second freezes that usually end up with me in the ground.

Lots of the stutters were in fields that are burning.  Smoke and clouds played havock with frame rates.

Anyways lots of other grief.

What I did was to remove all of the ATI drivers and other software, and then  use the 4.12 drivers with the  ATI Control Panels 6.14.10.5134 bundle.
 

Click on the link that reads; RADEON Previous Windows XP Drivers and Software versions prior to CATALYST 5.1 / Multimedia Center 9.03.

I couldn't get the link to the actual page to work, sorry :(

You have to look under previous drivers and software.

I am now back to 1600 X 1200  1012 Textures, vetical sync set to 60 fps.  And the smoke lockups and stutters are gone.  I can get some lowering of framerates in furballs and smoke at the fields but still well over 30 fps.

Having trouble aswell. However, 4.12 didn't do it for me.

I tried both the latest aswell as 4.12.

A week back I changed from Omega drivers to ATI Cataclyst drivers but changed back last night. I get about 10-20 more FPS with the Omega drivers, don't know why.

ouch 256mb ram?  you'd benefit greatly from 512+ with 512 still being merely adequate. i have a 9700pro and have 784mb... thikning about going to 1 gig.

Get rid of the Radeon drivers. Go to http://www.omegadrivers.net and download the latest omega drivers for Radeon cards. They are definatly better than the Radeon drivers.

Which version of the Omega drivers should I use?

Also, I have a 3200+ Athlon system with 1.5 GB of RAM.  

According to CPUX my RAM is working at the proper speed.

I loaded the Omega 5.11 drivers.  The problems came bace.

I am back  to the 4.12 ATI drivers, all seem to run pretty sooth again.

Instructions for proper install of video drivers.

Pick 1 driver:


Nvidea - http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp - go here and download the drivers to your desktop.

ATI - http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/....x=5&submit.y=4 - go here and download the drivers to your desktop.

Omega tweaked drivers. Recommended by Nvidea and ATI - http://www.omegadrivers.net/main.php - go here and download the drivers to your desktop.


Now get this:
http://www.driverheaven.net - Put it on your desktop


Now install DRIVER CLEANER


Go to add and remove programs and remove all references to ATI or Nvidea.

Restart in safe mode. Usually by clicking the f8 button during reboot.

DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING if windows asks.

.

Run DRIVER CLEANER. Pick the appropriate filter in the scroll down box AND CLICK THE CLEAN button.



Then restart. DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING once again. It's ok, all will be well :)

When you reach your desktop click on the driver you downloaded and follow prompts.

Restart..

 

If you have any problems read the helpfile that comes with DRIVE CLEANER.
