The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Guyana is the mass suicide/murder of the Jim Jones followers.  It looks like some people are trying to make it the 51st state.

Now wouldn't that chap Hugo Chavez hide

GuyanaUSA

Guyana, formerly known as British Guiana, is located on the north-east coast of South America. Guyana is 82,978 square miles in area, slightly smaller than the state of Idaho.  Similarly to the original Thirteen American Colonies, Guyana was once a British Colony.  English is the official language of Guyana and is spoken by 99% of the population.

Due mainly to emigration to the USA, Guyana's population growth is in the negative.  Only 650,000 people remain in Guyana.  According to some studies, of those people who remain in Guyana, almost each and every one of them is awaiting the issuance of an immigrant-visa for the USA!

More than 350,000 Guyanese people have already immigrated to the USA!  Truly a massive immigration. Over 100,000 Guyanese have become United States citizens.  The other 250,000 may become citizens upon fulfilling the statutory requirements of naturalization. The overwhelming majority of these individuals support the legal incorporation of Guyana into the USA, in the form of US Statehood, Commonwealth or Territory of the USA.  That newly created legal entity would be known as Guyana, USA.  Take a look at the New Guyana Flag!

The advantages derived from American territoriality are many: especially in the areas of culture, technology, science, scientific discovery, drug-interdiction, education, economics, tourism, sports, religion, the environment, the protection of natural resources and the rain forest; and to the overall security of both the USA and Guyana and to the improvement of the quality of life of all the people of both Guyana and the USA.

This web page is not affiliated with any political party.  In fact, the relationship between Guyana and the United States has grown under the influence of a number of different political parties during the last three decades.

Sounds awesome!  However, I would like to see some real figures as to how many actually support statehood into the US.

You are mistaking Guyana for French Guyanne. The "Iles du Salut" is where the history takes place. Been there, nothing much to see except huge spiders called "Matutus" and the occasional snake.

The Ariane launches are a blast tho (no pun intended). :)

If those numbers emigrating to the USA are true then the figures are truly astonishing. Astonishing, considering how difficult it is to gain legal status in the USA for most people. Emigrating to the USA legally is no easy matter.  There are a lot of hurdles to jump for most ordinary people yet it seems the Guyanans are really 'lucky'.

Unless you have a specific skill needed in the USA or have a direct relative living there as a citizen you have no chance. Presumably the Guyanans get in on the relatives visas. Otherwise it is incredibly difficult to emigrate to the USA.

As for statehood, well they shouldn't hold their breath. There is no good reason for Guyana to become part of the USA for Americans. First off it would drain taxpayers money. Secondly situated in South America it would become a magnet for illegal immigrants.  Those people not lucky enough to have the inside track like the Guyanans. If you think the Mexican border is difficult to defend, try defending a jungle frontier.

If the fact that most of the population has emigrated to the USA or would like too counts for anything then Ireland would have been the 51st state years ago or at least become part of Massachusetts with Boston as our capital. :aok :rofl

They are just dreamers those people.
