I could take a guess and say the ko varient was the fighter, hei a strafer, and cho a bomber buster?

Anyways, yes. Twin engine fighters =  good. And we need more Japanese planes anways. Though, as a preference, I'd rather see another bomber (G4M for example) before a fighter.

EDIT: Does anyone have any information on Japanese 37mm guns performance-wise? (Mr. Williams, I'm looking in your general direction)

Yes!  Bring the only Japanese plane a P-38 could out turn with incredible ease.  A plane like this would make me return to AH so I can shoot it down.
