Would you have felt the same way if you were born in Germany in 1920?
Americans may well have be on the side of Right
this time but, unless you are an immigrant, you are an american only through an accident of birth.
Your association of our right to defend ourselves with respect to the enemy is ridiculous. What would you have done if for some reason (nazi's taking power in US) you would have found that US is on the wrong and the enemy is respectable? Would you let them kill yourself?
While warriors strive to kill (or, more generally, defeat) the enemies, they do not usually feel the need to toejam on their graves or take away their humanity(practice of taking ears/scalps or eating liver nonwithstanding - it is more along the lines of pride and respect then humiliation). That is for the civilians to do in liew of actually risking their lives.
I bet that many soldiers down in the trenches in the middle of rainy night empathise more with their adversaries then with their own civilians cuddling to their wives in warm beds.
During last years of WWI russian soldiers often had practice of fraternising with the enemy - german soldiers. They shared food/smoke and played games among the trenches and then went back to killing each other.
Then those soldiers went back home and participated in one of the bloodiest civil wars in history killing their own civillians with cruelty rarely seen before.
WWII russian soldiers never fraternise with the enemy though - Stalin made sure they were afraid of their own komissars more.
Also, as I mentioned elsewhere, Walker's parents may have been free-wheeling lefties, but his views are typical of fundamental religious right. Just check what he thought about women, gay, religion, commercialism, etc.
