Year-by-Year Planesets
« on: January 13, 2006, 04:11:09 PM »
First, I'd love to get my hands on a year-by-year list of the available rides, along with the actual data on engine type, hp, top speed, range, etc.  Maybe it looks something like this: (and no, this is not actual data)

1940
Type               Eng          HP         Top Speed        Range           Armament
Spitfire I        Merlin IIa  965         360                  800 miles     8 x .303 MG
Hurricane I
109E
109F
C.202
P.40B
...

1944
Type               Eng          HP         Top Speed        Range           Armament
LA-7
Me-262
Spit XIV

...

You get the idea - data breaking up the plane sets by year of introduction and some info on what the specs on the rides are so that folks might get interested in trying them out.

After we get that, how about maybe, just maybe we try some kind of phased introduction of rides into the MA after a reset.  Maybe something like Monday kicks off 1940, Tuesday 1940-41, Wed 40-42, Thu 40-43, Fri 40-44, Sat - Sun 40-45.  If somebody wins a map, kick back on the next map at 1940 and go from there day by day until the map is either won or reset.

I'm sure I'll hear a lot of "NO WAY - I LIKE MY LA7" (to which I reply try the -5), but I would like to see something that gets more early rides utilized.  Maybe we need a 2nd arena with something like this running.  I'm just getting tired of the endless stream of LA-7s, Spit XVIs and N1K2s.  I'm sure a good amount of time was spent redoing Spit Vs and 109Fs - seems like a waste when all you see flying one is late war rides.

N1K2-Js you mean.  The N1K1 was a float plane fighter and the N1K1-J was still significantly inferior to the N1K2-J we have.

Breakdown by early/late war sounds like a good idea. I'd ALSO like to see like old AW, where the ETO and PTO were seperate arenas.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Isn't that the new Axis vs. Allies arena?

Axis & Allies Arena
« Reply #5 on: January 14, 2006, 11:59:20 AM »
Not exactly, although I like the idea of the axis vs allies arena.  If they don't do some sort of year-by-year filtering though, I think the arena turns into the LA7 & Spit XVI vs the 190D9 & N1K2 arena.

What I want to get is a better feel for what the air war was like "along the way".  It is pretty easy to pick out a good ride in the 1944-45 set, but what is the best ride in 1941 or 42 or 43?  I'd love to see a Spit V vs 109F furball over a field, or the Spit IXs and P51Bs vs 109G's & 190A5s in 1942 and not be worried about some cherry-picker coming by in his 1945 ride.

Scenarios are well and good, but I think a constantly rotating year-by-year planeset gives people a chance to try out a wider variety of rides (and maybe find some new favorites).

Just my $.02 again ;)

Hmmm.... I'd forgotten about that.  I used to like that in AW myself.
Maybe they could link that on a "map" basis - some maps with the ETO set and some with the PTO set - then turn on the year-by-year and say, fly PTO 1941 on one arena/map while ETO 1943 was going on in another arena/map?

I don't know how many arenas would be optimal, or if HT wants to split the flyers up too much, but it might be interesting to try.  Another benefit is that if you get took sick of the BS on Ch200 in one arena, you can always go to the other ;)

Looks like maybe what they are talking about in the axis & allies forum is close to what I'm thinking.  I don't know if I'd limit it to axis vs allies in each years' setup, but it would interesting to at least try it that way.

I'd still like the actual data on each plane (from the top of the thread), but the planeset breakdown you have will do for me.  Anything that gets us away from the endless stream of LA7s & Spit XVIs gets my vote at this point.

Back in the day, we had a rotating planeset back in WB.  There was a lot of argument about how it should be done, and even about doing it at all.  The result, therefore, was the type of compromise that made absolutely nobody happy, at least when I was doing WB (late 2.whatevers, just before HT and Pyro bailed).

IIRC, the tours were 3 weeks long, with 1940 to about mid-1944 taking the 1st 2 weeks.  This made each day equal to about 1/4 of a year.  Each day, therefore, new planes became available (while all the older ones stayed on), which meant that the BoB, the Focke-Wulf Summer, etc., all only lasted 1 day in the arena.  Then we had a "uber week" with all the planes on, including all the late-war uberplanes.  I'm sure it was done differently at different points in WB's life, however.

But the main point is, as I experienced it, everybody agreed that it sucked, although for different reasons.  Those who wanted to fly in a certain early era were unhappy that it only lasted 1 day (with few folks flying), after which their planes of interest were obsolete.  OTOH, those who only wanted to fly the late-war planes (including all the landgrab dweebs, due to the better ord) were pissed that these were only available 1/3 of the time, even though for a complete week.  And everybody hated being forced to fly planes they'd rather not fly, just because their favorite rides weren't available for a lot of the time.  And because it was pay-by-the-hour, a lot of folks sat out completely until some plane they liked became available.

I can't see things being done differently in AH.  And because nobody liked it in WB, I doubt we'll see it in AH.  That's what the TOD arena will focus on instead.

Forgot about that old thread.

Thats the one I disaree with the 12/44 for the 190-D9.
Although it was ready for deployment at the end of Dec 44 (at our boost levels) it wouldn't have seen actual service until at earliest Jan 45.
