TrackIR4 vs 3 ??
« on: December 14, 2005, 09:00:44 PM »
Been thinking about getting a Track IR,
(looking for something for wife to get me for Christmas)

Has anyone used a 3 and then upgraded to a 4?

Is the extra cost worth it? Is the IR 4 that much better
if so, how?

Thanks

The camera view window is larger in 4. In TIR3 the window is so small that it restricts your head movements unless you attach the camera further away from you. TIR 3 is fast enough IMO, so the extra "speed" promised by TIR 4 is marginal at best.

If its considerably more expensive I'd go for used TIR3. I'd say that AH needs the Vector Expansion as it generally works great in AH.
I bought mine new and I think it was too expensive compared to what extra it gave in games and how well it works.

TIR 3 user here.

Here's the thing. If you aren't planning on doing the Vector thing with the TIR, then the "limited range" of the TIR3 isn't a problem, because all it reads is your head rotating in place. In other words, your head isn't moving all over the place, so you don't need the range.

If you're planning on doing the Vector upgrade, I bet the wider angle of the TIR4 would be a good thing.

The TIR3 is more than fast enough, speedwise.

With the view system hitech set up it makes tir3 work great within the camera range that 3vector offers. I have no qualms with the speed of 3 and with the right set up you can get plenty of range side to side by moving it back plenty far, got mine at about  an arm and a half distance away. Get tir3 vector, I dont see a big reason to get 3 pro, tho if you got the money get 4. As far as support goes they say they will be supporting 3 and up for  a long time.

Before VECTOR, the TIR tracked a SINGLE DOT and its movement.  Because it was a single dot, it was effectivly tracking a dot on a 2d surface....long story short, leaning to the left and turningyour head to the left produced the same result and made the learning curve HUGE (its hard not to lean a little, and leaning a little was like turning your head A LOT.

VECTOR tracks 3 dots in relative position.  Because these dots are tracked relative to each other, turning your head not only moves the dots some, it also makes some of them appear closer to each other to the tracking eye.  This way leaning and turning your head are now 99% seperated and you gain the ability to track roll AND distance.  It takes a 3 month learning curve and makes it a few weeks with a 80% improvement in first day of use being 'resonable'

Now as far as 4 goes, I wouldnt waste my money if you have 3, getting good use out of tir3vector is often just a matter of moving the unit a few feet away (like on the wall instead of the monitor.

ya its amazing how well the camera pics up the subtle movements of your track hat, you can just keep moving it back until you get a range your happy with, anyone tested to see just how far you can move a tir 3 camera back until it loses the hat signal ?
