before you put it in the oil pick up the phone and dial 9-1-    .  :p

we had some guys a ways south of here fry a bird for their lunch the day before thanksgiving.  it was a group of carpenters, they were cooking in the garage of the house they had just finished.  the thermometer on the oil failed, they got it too hot and it boiled over when they put the bird in.

burned down a brand new house that had never even had anyone spend a night in it.

luckily the stores were still open so they got another bird and cooked it in the yard next door while the fire department was putting out the fire from the first bird.

We're going to try the brine this Christmas. I'm a little burned out of fried turkey after the last 5 years.

Mmmm...it's probably smelling like turkey goodness by now.  I dropped off a computer at one of our offices on Tuesday, and they were getting ready for their office christmas party by deep frying a turkey outside.  The disturbing part is that it was raining, although the rain was light, and they were doing it under a little overhang at the entrance.  Fortunately, it wasn't an Oregon sideways rain, or that could've gotten ugly. :)

Dred....the commisary actually had "fresh" turkeys earlier this week.  I didn't want to gamble on them not having one on christmas eve.

SOB,

I took it out of the fryer about 20 minutes ago.  It's been under foil since then waiting on the wife to "catch up".

I'm gonna carve it up in a few minutes here.  I made a bet with my wife that her sister would not be here in time......wich she's not we planned on eating at five.  I have no clue were she's at and I'm tired of waiting, they can eat late for all I care.

:)

As a mini fact-oid... Butterball turkeys are pre-brined when you buy them.

Capt. Apathy: Of the people that burn down their houses deep frying turkeys, there are literally tens of others that end up with a great bird and don't have to spend the holidays in a homeless shelter.

Be smart, follow basic safety guidelines (the ones I posted a few weeks ago are a good starting point in lieu of nothing), and you'll have a fantabulous turkey.

We were going to deep fry one tonight, but part of the fry crew ended up in urgent care for an unrelated ailment so we'll do it tomorrow.

BTW, we brined a turkey for Thanksgiving:  meh.  Better than a dry roast, but not as good as deep fried.  Good luck!
