Rudder Pedal PROBLEMS
« on: January 01, 2006, 09:05:04 AM »
my trusty side winder force feedback 2  to went AWOL. So  now im using Ch rudder pedals and a thrustmaster hostas . .... WTF is the deal with the rudder pedals?
I turned the sensitivity almost off as well as dead band and still the slightest movement of the pedals and I pull gunsite  six inches off target.
Any tips on how to mellow them out.
Thanks RaVe

are your sliders for the  Z axis ( rudder ) <---going on memory here maybe another LETTER axis.....

are they at default, a gentle swing up from left to right ( picture the right side of the letter U, or maxed all way across the top? sounds like you got em maxed out

you talked about senstivity & dead band, you did not mention anything about DAMPENING, do a print screen of your rudder settings, it might help us, help you?

( hit print screen, open  MSpaint, click edit to paste, save as a jpg)

Thanks

yes its Z axis.
I have them almost on the bottom not the top at max dead ban and dampening are pushed up.

It seems if I want to turn the plane to the RIGHT that the plane is more stable if I push the LEFT rudder peddle forward wile at the same time push the joy stick to the RIGHT....
but if I push the right pedal forward and the joy stick to the right the plane is all over the place.

Deadband first.

This tells the computer where to start accepting input. If your getting huge swings with just a touch of rudder I'm willing to bet your deadband is the problem.

In setup/controls/joystick/settings wiggle the rudders so they just bump up against the springs. All you want to do is wiggle them in the center. If your seeing any inputs in the top blue box, increase deadband until you don't.

(This could be harder to test with rudders than a stick. With a joystick I either use pinky finger to "twirl" it around the center, or lightly move the base in a circle to accomplish the same thing. What you want is to find where the "edge" is that its picking up. Then set the deadband so its slightly higher)

Damping unless you have a spiking pot in the rudders can be safely left no more than a half inch or so up.

If after setting deadband the problem remains. Your going to have to tune it down with the sliders on the left.

Make sure your selected to rudder in the top scroll bar.

Set the first 5 sliders very low, not at the default 45 degree angle.
0 should be full down, then raise each one the thickness of the button on the slider. Or about 1/4 inch in my screen. Do this for 10 - 50.

Now you still want to end up with 90 at the very top. So set 60, 70, 80 to split the difference remaining.

End picture should look like a low curve, instead of a straight angled line.

Test them, see how they react now. Then go back & fine tune as needed.

Once your done, BACKUP your settings folder!
Save it to floppy, burn it to a CD, copy it to a second hard drive, or all of the above.

Trust me, will save you anguish down the road.

Well, i cant seee anything that would screw your set up up.:(   If everything works fine in windows, that means all of your potentiometers are working properly.  If you get into AH and just default the deadbands to see if your in the ball game, they should work fine.  Deadbands, unless tampered with, are just a means of tweaking a fundamentally sound system IMHO.  I think its been mentioned, make sure you are selecting the z axis on the pedals.  My pedals read full left rudder=0 on z axis.  Full right rudder =65565 on z axis. The y axis is the teeter totter wheel brake axis, and the x axis is not used.  If your not careful, you could map this axis to your rudders.  Other than that, I dunno.:(  BTW, nice avatar.  Do you use moisturizer?  I get dry bone this time of year.
