A Perked UberGoon
« on: December 30, 2005, 11:25:00 PM »
With only 1 perked buff out there, of very limited value due to its limited load and range, I was wondering what else short of an uberbuff like the B29 would be a good thing to spend buff perks on.  Then it hit me:  an ubergoon!

Say something like the C-46.  This plane could carry 2-3 times as much as the C-47.  So in AH, it could carry 2-3 loads of what the C-47 now carries.  That is, 20-30 drunks, or 2-3 cargoes, or any combination thereof.  Thus, you'd have some redundant drunks to increase the chance of field capture if you get in there.  Or you could resupply a field or a strat quicker.  Or you could both capture and resupply a field in the same hop.

Of course, I wouldn't charge many perks to fly this thing, just enough to discourage overuse, kinda like with the Chog.

sry this is slightly off topic but shouldn't the goon be able to carry more vehicle supplies an airfield cargo than the M3, maybe 2 or 3 times as much.

Naw I'd rather have a german cargo plane. Now this is worth perking. Its slower then the C47 but it makes up for it with the load and guns. Just think of the milking you could do 13 fields in one sortie. Only bad thing would be youd have to land the plane to let the troops out.

The Messerschmitt Me-323 was ununusal and revolutionary in serveral ways. First, it was developed from a glider, the Me-321 transport glider, second, it was among the largest of aircraft to fly in WWII, third, it loaded through 11 foot high doors in the front of the fusilage, four, it was powered wholly by French engines, and five, it could use Jet Assisted Take Off (JATO). The aircraft was designed with massive, semi-cantilever, high-mounted wings in order to lift the heavy weights desired. As the aircraft technology was not yet sufficiently advanced for this type of wing, they had to be braced from the fusilage out to the middle of the wing. To reduce weight and to save on aluminum much of the wing was made of plywood and fabric. The fusilage was of composite metal-wood-fabric with heavy bracing in the floor to hold the weight. In order to get the powered version of the glider airborne it was equipped with six Gnome-Rhone engines. The French engines were chosen as their design was complete and they could be built in occupied France without interfering with German engine production. The landing gear were a set of 10 semi-recessed wheels designed to flex like caterpillar treads for landing on rough terrain and to distribute the weight over a large area. In all, it bore a remarkable resemblance to the heavy-airlift aircraft of today, indeed, it was the forerunner of this type of transport aircraft. The cargo hold was 36 feet long, 10 feet wide and 11 feet high. The typical loads it carried were: two 4-ton trucks, or 8,700 loaves of bread, or an 88 mm Flak gun, it's equipment, ammunition and crew, or 52 drums of fuel (45 gal/252 L), or 130 men, or 60 stretchers. It was, for it's time, a remarkable aircraft. The Me-323 transport had a crew of five comprised of two pilots, two flight engineers and a radio operator. Two additional gunners could be carried as well. The pilot's area was in front of the leading edge of the wing at the top of the cargo area and was armoured. It was powered by six Gnome-Rhone 14N 48/49 14 cylinder radial, air-cooled engines each rated at 990 hp. Four rockets could be mounted on each wing outside of the last engine to assist with take-offs. The left and right side engines had to be counter-rotating to avoid the severe torque that would be generated by six engines rotating in the same direction. It had a maximum speed of only 136 mph (218 km/h) at sea level and speed dropped with altitude. Range is not known, but it was used to quickly build up troops in North Africa flying from Italy. It was armed with five 13 mm machine guns firing from a dorsal position behind the wings and from the fusilage. They were manned by the extra gunners, radio operator and engineers

I'd like to second Truekill's idea--bring in the Me 323!

Think of the fun!

You could land out of sight of an nme town, drive your M3 w/troops to the town and voila! a capture!

Me-323.....

Not even I could miss a target that big and slow..... and I dont care how many guns it had, its half life would be painfully short in the MA.

Not to compare apples and oranges, but have you ever tried to kill one in "that other sim"?

Its harder to knock down than a B-17. I've emptied a full ammo load from a P-47 into one and it kept right on flying. I've also attacked and had my entire flight knocked down (IARs) before we could so much as flame an engine.

If AH models it like that, it would have a pretty damn good survival rate, especially if its escorted.

The Ki-84-Ic absolutely annilates the Me323 as does the Fw190A-8 in the other sim.

The "other sim" also has crappy gunnery models, and a really bad damage model. Most MGs are totally useless, as you can empty your entire ammo load into a plane point blank and not have any damage to that plane. Hell, you can empty most of a 109F's nose gun into a plane and not even set it on fire. So that "other sim" is mostly crap if ya ask me (and why I don't fly it).

Try it with "realistic gunnery" unchecked. Then the 232 goes down instantly

C47s could carry more than 10 paras.  So that, perked, would be a start.
A brand new bomber would take more time than would be worth.
