This just came to mind as I was reading the 38/rolls powerd.
Ok now for the question. Was a griffon ever mated to the mustang airframe during the war for testing?

RR had a project to put a Griffon to the Mustang airframe. It was quite similar concept as the P-39/P-63 ie the engine was located behind the pilot. It reached mock up stage and it featured Mustang wing and tail surfaces while the center fuselage was custom built.

I know about the reno aircraft. What i realy wanted to know was about  the historical period, if testing was ever done. It just seems to me if the spitfire got a nice performance boost.  They would have tried it on a P-51.
