Filmviewer problem: Unable to save as AVI
« on: January 09, 2006, 01:32:50 AM »
I encountered a strange bug in the film viewer yesterday when saving some ahf-video into AVI-format from a map test event held on saturday in the SEA. The map was the new Karelia by Kanttori and BlauK.

Everything works great when I use films that I have personally recorded, but when I load an ahf-film that has been recorded by someone else and try to save the entire film, or a selection from it, into AVI-format, the film viewer does not start running the film. Instead it displays just the default view from the tower. It is an tower from the Karelia-map, but the actual filmed action does not start. The saved AVI-video is also working fine, it shows just the tower view. All AHF films can be viewed with the film viewer, the problem is just the save to avi -part.

Any ideas what might be causing this? I tried with all possible codecs and uncompressed too, but those did not have any effect. All videos were correctly recorded, but just the tower view is showing. I can move in the tower view to different views (external, fixed etc.) but that doesn't do any good.

Well, i cant really help you with the 'save as avi' thing, cause i never got it to work myself. Me as well get the tower view, for all films ive tried this on.

Check out http://www.fraps.com . Very easy to work with this one, plus its free (if you dont mind the 'watersign' and the 30 sec time limit).

Too bad the save as avi -thing is not working, probably have to revert to the Fraps then.

Do you guys know if the capture resolution can be adjusted with the fraps? With the save as AVI there are several resolutions available (720x480 for example).

You can switch between half size and full size. I usually record at full size, (944x720) and 30 fps, which is plenty enough in quality, since you need to compress it later anyway.

Edit: Learn something new every day! It seems fraps records the avi at the actual resolution the film has on your screen, ie if I maximize the viewer window i get 944x720, where as if i leave it at standard startup size i get 640x534. Strangely the 'full screen' button comes back with a res of 640x512) LoL, yes, i guess the res can be customized ;).

PS: Make sure the vid capture key doesnt have any function in the viewer. I had F9 at the beginning, which always put me back on snap view and pos1 when starting to record. Very annoying.

I tried the Fraps yesterday and it works great :)

The 30 sec limitation doesn't matter and the logo at the top of the videos is not so bad either. I tried to get rid of the logo with some, ahem.. malicious ways and ended up getting a whole bunch of malicious software into my computer :o :furious :)
