Is hook slowing down the plane?I mean when it is out.
And btw gears do, right?

Tailhook shouldn't slow plane any appreiciable amount. Yes Gear, flaps, all have a huge inpact.

F4U pilots actually lowered their gears occasionally when slowing down in a dive-bomb run

Put a nice chunk of metal on your car and drive on the freeway, isn't much drag. Put some gear on your car and drive on the freeway and notice how much air resistance you get:aok

durring a 48 hour AHII binge i began to forget simple flight procedures one time. i took off from a CV with an F4U. i became furious that it wouldnt go over 350 mph. i asked everyone what it could be, recalibrated my throttle, etc. finally i realized that my landing gear was still down, i was so embarassed that i told everyone it was my throttle sticking.

The F4u's main gear are specifically designed to act as speed brakes. They have an unloader valve in the mains that is specifically designed to prevent the gear staying down in any situation where they might be overstressed. That is why sometimes they would not fully extend. Another interesting tid bit, is that the FWD main gear door attached to the upper oleo is actually called a dive brake in the IPB and E+M.
