question about college football and red shirt freshman
« on: January 09, 2006, 06:42:12 PM »
Hey guys:

I love watching college ball, but I wanna know what they mean by 'red shirt freshman' as opposed to freshman? Wait, while you're at it , since up here it's not the same, can u tell me what's the order re: freshman, sophmore, etc.?

Thanks.

Every college player has 5 years to play 4.  So, often the newest players will not play at all and will get a "redshirt"(dont know the origins of that term, but would be interested in finding out).  these players will play in thier second year of college, but will still be freshmen as far as playing time goes, and so are called redshirt freshmen.  Freshmen in thier second year.

A freshman who plays in his first year is a true freshman.

Oh and its:
Freshman
Sophomore
Junior
Senior

Ty Blknit for the quick answer. We be wondering, is there any such thing as a third year player that is playing for the first time? and is he a sophmore?

When you say a player has 5 years to play, what if he didn't play the first two years then played the third, can he still play two  years after that?

Thanks for the answers, even if the questions are slow, .

Redshirt (v.) “To withdraw (a player) from the varsity team to add a year to his or her eligibility," 1955, in allusion to the red shirts worn by athletes on the scrimmage squad.

umm...lessee, if he didn't play his first 2 years, then he plays for the first time in his 3rd year, then yes, he is a "Redshirt" Sophomore and has 2 more years after that.

No problem on the questions, Bumba....finally I actually have some answers!  But now you must do a WOOOOOO PIG SOOOOOOOOOOIEEEEE!!!!! :rofl

Thanks Toad!  I had thought maybe it was something like that, but didn't know.

It's a way for the franchises err schools to squeeze another year of labor out of their indentured servant.
