Krusty, that bulge you see when looking down toward the rudder pedals covers the cannon breech.

I think that even the 151/20 leaves a bit short of the propellor in 109 so a barrel explosion would always happen inside the engine compartment more of less destroying the engine. Any breech explosion in 109 would happen between the feet of the pilot.

I think that a barrel explosion in P39 would probably make the a/c lose it s propellor. Breech explosion would not at least blow the engine but the forward compartment is full of .50 and 20mm or 37 mm ammo.

PS. IIRC A Finnish Morane Saulnier was damaged due to barrel explosion of its Hispano. The a/c RTBd successfully although it lost its oil and the engine was a wreck although it brought the a/c back.

Good point: especially with the MK 108 which had a very short barrel.

In contrast, the very long barrels of the MGC-30/L and the Hispano must have reached (or got very close to) the prop.

A very powerful, high-velocity German 20mm aircraft gun developed in the 1930s, intended for engine-mounting in fighters. Only one He 112 prototype was fitted with one and tried it in the SCW. The experiment was not judged a success, it was too big, heavy and slow-firing. The barrel alone was 1.8m long.
