HT, I think I found the perfect color fit
« on: January 10, 2006, 05:06:38 PM »
HT, I think I found the perfect color fit for Aces High.

 IMO a bit more softer colors overall, perfect for clear Summer/Autumn skies of depiction. A little more immersive, a little softer for the eyes, and a little more natural to what real eyes might perceive over the European skiesl. Also, while the nights aren't in the MA, the light settings are adequate for its depiction.

 I'm pretty confident about this configuration.

 These are the corresponding lines I've saved for my arena.cfg file in the Settings folder:

ColorLight[0]=1073741823
ColorLight[1]=1066120429
ColorLight[2]=-1101501079
ColorSun[0]=15859706
ColorSun[1]=12185853
ColorSun[2]=1056991743
ColorFog[0]=1073731504
ColorFog[1]=1063735851
ColorFog[2]=1058018325
ColorDuskFog[0]=5802239
ColorDuskFog[1]=6397439
ColorDuskFog[2]=0
ColorSky[0]=1056951197
ColorSky[1]=1047814458
ColorSky[2]=0
ColorCloud[0]=11184810
ColorCloud[1]=11184810
ColorCloud[2]=-1088941036

 Anyone else want to try it out, replace the corresponding lines of the arena.cfg file with above, in your Settings folder.

 Try setting yourself at the Eastern most corner of a certain map, on the beach, set the time to 5:30 (darkness), time multiplier to 50~75 and watch how the colors change, first from the horizonal level at ground, and then over the 15k cloud layer. Very confident with this one, I am - these colors alone can make AH look more realistic :D :D :D

You must have a dark monitor. Those settings are way to washed out for me (MY AH Gamma is set to point >>> .6). Your 190s skins on my monitor (LCD 24" widescreen) look almost 'white' and are washed out. If you look at the thread by Krusty in the Skins forum you will see the trouble he had calibrating his monitor.

The default to me is much better...

Bruno, I use a 1.0 gamma setting for the game.

 While monitors may differ, if the colors don't look strange at the standard AH 1.0 gamma setting then by all means, it should be alright for others too.

 With all due respect, then wouldn't that mean your monitor is strange?

 Again, I use the default 1.0 gamma the game starts with, and I didn't touch the gamma settings with the display settings accessible via the background screen of the Windows. Both monitor settings and in-game gamma settings are 'out-of-the-box'.

That's why I told you to check this thread:

Need serious feedback here, all my skins too light?

and this one:

CRT general color balancing guide

But that's here-nor-there, you entitled this thread:

Bruno, those two threads you link too should not be considered to provide any useful information towards monitor settings.  Krusty was working with a broken monitor and any information provided will only work for him, and should not be construed as anything generally useful.

What color temperature do you and Kweassa have your monitors set to?  That will probably provide the best place to start in figuring out why there is such a difference between you both.

Kweassa, if you have not, you might want to set your monitor's color temperature to around 6200-6500K and look at those colors again.

Skuzzy, tried at 6500 temperature - I don't see any big changes. The only thing I've noticed was a faint hint of red in my monitor (the RGB settings are at default 50,50,50, untouched) compared to the temp setting I was using - so I changed the colors correspondingly. I've also made the sky a bit bluer, and the fog a bit whiter.

 The problem is a 'white fog' has a very nasty transition issue with the sky color, and a more natural 'bluish fog', which feels a lot more like what 'haze' would be, rather than fog, makes the terrains look a little dark and dampy. So, this this fog is a compromising point.

 Other than that, only teensey minor changes - and I say it still looks good.

I understand, I wasn't recommend he read those threads for tips on how to calibrate his monitor but to show the variety that exists. A lot of folks now use LCD monitors which are 'brighter' then most CRTs, especially older CRTs.

I have a CRT that's just a few months old and my AH 'gamma' on it is set to .9. Its not as bright as this LCD but on both monitors Kweassa's settings appear to 'washed out' especially compared to default. Both my monitors are calibrated first with monitor settings, then adobe gamma. I have ATI cards in both CPUs and those color settings are set to default (untouched). For the ATI card on this CPU I use custom 'smart shaders' for the FB/AEP/PF, for AH smart shaders are set to none.

But as I said that's here-nor-there as the topic of this thread is Kweassa's 'perfect settings'. They aren't perfect for me...:p
