My guess is he lost it on takeoff. WAY too much power there trying to get around the corner. Shame he trashed a fine vintage bird like that.

On the other hand that will count as a ditch since he left the runway (water). Half points for the mission.:p
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

Looks like a goofed takeoff to me too.  Ought to have aborted with the first fishtail.  Probably had gust lock in elevator so he couldn't lift off.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

It looked like a Grumman Goose so a quick google turned this up.

goose accident

It seems the pilot hit the water while dodging power lines with the result seen.  It was during the making of a surf movie 'Endless Summer II'. They actually used this sequence in the movie. Next day they went back to film the surfers leaping from the wreck withe their surfboards and heading for the beach. The Grumman was rebuilt.

The Grumman Goose is particularly prone to ground looping in a crosswind. There is one based here in Ireland and it only now finished a rebuild since it ground looped two years ago.  I was looking at in the hangar only the other day. When they say 'Grumman iron works'. They weren't kidding it looks more like a battleship than an aeroplane. Lots of rivets and heavy duty plating.
