Does anyone else miss the real ozkansas...
« Reply #15 on: January 16, 2006, 01:47:06 AM »
Well, if I could get a little active assistance I'm working on a new map as well, just that with what I'm doing there's a LOT of work for just me to handle. Posted a call for help on the TE forum but so far no replies even asking what I'm doing (granted, haven't checked to see if that forum's been posted on tonight yet). :(
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

The old Ozkansas map was a fitting tribute to the man whose handle graces the map.

The new one is a faint shadow of the original.

I wish they would restore it; I miss Oz. I think of him daily and I'm saddened that "his" map was essentially neutered and made almost as boring for play as most of the others.

How was the map neutered? Except for the cosmetic changes, it is the same map as far as I can see.

What has changed is the people flying, for example, I saw 10+ Rooks attacking an undefended Bish base while a sector away 10+ Bish were attacking an undefended Rook base. The two armadas were almost close enough to pass one another...

I am confused now, I though this was one of Festers masterpices, have I given credit to the wrong person? If so let me know and I will certainly edit the original post.

EDIT - Now that I reread what you wrote.  Was it created by Fester but named in honor of another?  Sorry if it's a dumb question, but I was pretty new to the game when it first came out so there may be some history im missing.

I ran across the manual for some software called "MapMaker" which imported DEM files and converted them to AH terrain format (I have no clue how or why I got that).  That manual (a couple of years old) stated AH was limited to only six  different terrain tiles.  Is that still true!?!  If so then I give a big to terrain designers for being able to design even remotely passable terrains with such an extreme limitation.

AH1 had 6 different...+ the transition tiles. AH2 has many more. This is the reason that Oz and Pizza haven't been seen...there simply aren't any tiles for them.

No, I'm pretty sure there are guys making their own custom tiles these days.  Speaking of which does anyone have a copy of the Rush-Karelia map?  I saw some screenshots and it looks badarse, would like to check it out.

actually we were NOE (rooks) and did not see the bish. We were trying to sneak a base. We did however let some folks know that the bish were on the way.

We were on a mission. I am not going to drop a mission just to fend off a horde.

Yes a real mission posted and advertised and we only had 9 guys. We did however enjoy the fact you ratted us out. :D  Tattle tale

I do however take your point Del The hording does get bad with hordes just trading basses and dancing around each other.

The cool blue water, and wood decked cvs.

Dirt landing strips and totally custom bases.

Palm trees and sandy beaches.

This one was fun to cap.

I tried to get a shot of battleship row but couldn't find it.  Its a shame how much time Fester must have invested in making this map and it only saw a few months use.  Everything custom from the airbases to the resupply barges, there were even mini tanktowns between the gv bases.......  Anyone else getting tired of terrain that all looks about the same regardless of map?

Fester for making the coolest map EVAR!

That map had character ... same as the guy it was made im memory of.

Now, it just the same boring landscape as all the other maps ... just different land masses.

13th TAS commissioned Fester to make OzKansas. The idea was for a carrier-centric map that would allow the landgrabbers to landgrab while providing more than the usual opportunity for CV battles. At that time (and still now, really) many furballers thought CV battles were the best action on any map. OZ had more CV's/Ports than any other map by far.

As Slap pointed out (and Slap was the one who pointed out that we should "dedicate the map to OZ"; it was an excellent idea.) Fester was enthusiastic about the naming of the map:  "it would be a most excellent rememberance of him he was a great guy, always a good sport".

The map did have caricature; it was visually unlike any other. Beyond that, it had excellent CV actions as well.

Charles Erickson, "OzKansas". A truly fine man.
