Author Topic: Strange popup alert-type box appears on my desktop (Read 268 times)

At the top it says "mIRC Wizard"

Below that, it says:

"Hi, I am a mIRC Connection Wizard. I see that you are having problems connecting to a server" (or some such) Then it goes on to ask if you want it to fix your problem ... I don't recall the exact verbiage.

What is this? It doesn't look like an official windows message.

No. I don't chat. Never did. Whatever I've got here installed itself, so it must be adware. I was hoping someone had heard of it and could tell me how to get rid of it. My adaware and spybot scanners aren't picking it up.

Never heard of it but I guess it's 'social engineered' adware or a virus trying to fool you into giving it access through your firewall.

Make sure you have the Windows Messenger service OFF (not to be confused with Windows Messenger, the IM software).

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services

Find the 'Messenger' item and shut it off. Shouldnt harm anything on your system unless you are on a Corporate LAN or something.

thanks, I'm pretty sure I have it off (I set up according to Black Viper and Shields Up websites) but I'lll double check when I get home.
