New vid card, need driver info-settings plz
« on: January 22, 2006, 04:39:48 AM »
Hey all, I changed out my ATI 9250 to a GeForce 5500.  Still PCI (boo, hiss, I know)- I am using the 77.(?) driver, that was on the CD.  Should I use an older/newer?  The new card really kicked my framerate up,  and resolved alot of issues. (It's Dx9 ready, the 9250 was not).  I did have two 2-3 second freezes last night, but I'm not sure if that's my settings or not.

It's a GeForce FX 5500 256 DDR.  The card settings show the fog table on, PCI texture memory size as 127MB, Mipmap detail is best image, AA app. pref, Anistropic off and refresh rate is app. pref.  At 1024 x 768, 32 bit.

In Game settings are default,  256 texture size, I preload the system memory (1G)  showing 480M used in game.  Also I have the wave action off, and plane skins.

I went from a max of 38fps  to 88fps, and an average of 18-21fps to 41-44 :aok

ATI 3DMark score:2877
Nvidia 3DMark score:4897

Thanks

Thanks,  I wasn't sure if I should use that one or not.  On the card I replaced Skuzzy had me use an older ATI driver, and I was not sure if the use of an older driver would apply to this card also.  I guess some of the PCI video cards work better with older drivers.  Hell, I don't really have a clue anymore.  PCI burnout-

Nope.  Do not use the latest driver from NVidia for any 5000 series card or earlier.  Use the 61.77 drivers.  The later drivers are opimized for the 6000 series and later, at the expense of really smooth game play for any card older than that.

Thanks Skuzzy, much appriciated.  Should I use application preference on the settings (AA- An filter- Vert. Sync) and is it cool to use 75 hz refresh rate?  Thanks again
