Vid card question
« on: January 17, 2006, 08:18:08 AM »
I'll be marrying my girlfriends computer, er, uh..my girlfriend soon and want to know a little more about her video card.  See has a nice CPU but Im not so sure about the video card.  It is an Nvidia Gforce4 MX4000.  If Im not mistaken, isnt that card a bit old?  Is the ATI 9600 Pro that I have better than that card?

It's ok, I wrote that, above, leaving myself wide-open for off-the-wall comments :)    Someone built her AMD 3200+ computer for her and I think she got jipped with the video card they put in it.  Dont know much about the Gforce cards, myself, but if im not mistaken, any Gforce card is outdated.  She spent 800 to have that built and I think she got hosed.  60 gig HD, I think 512 DDR 3200.  Could have built that a lot less myself, but I didnt know her then.

I dont know about FASTER, but yes the 9600 is by far a better video card than the MX4000.  Even my old MX440 was better than the MX4000.  Its not that its OLD really, its just that they took OLD technology, added more memory to it (slow memory at that) with a narrow bus, and tried to pass it off as "newer".  It's a piece of junk.

I figured as much, thanks.  It plays AH2 way better than my computer (1800+ with the 9600 Pro card), but then again, AH2 is more processor dependent.  Thanks for the replies.

The MX400 is crap, and always was, but....this comment is wrong.  A GeForce 6600 will utterly destroy a Radeon 9600 performancewise, let alone a 6800 or a 7800.  The 7800 series is still top line hardware and gives very good performance.
