People get wrapped up in the whole auction experience.  I go to a lot of estate auctions and I constantly see non-dealers bidding on stuff for a higher price than they can get it new.  Electronics especially.  I think people get competitive and don't want to get outbid and feel like they "lost".

Yup, pretty much exactly that.   I rarely go to an auction, but buy off ebay once in a while.  I feel when some other smuck bids too high, I dont bite, rather I sit back and feel I won by virtue of not being quite as stupid.

Well some of us make a mistake and pay $80 for a $50 video card because we aren't smart enough to pull our head out of our *** :(

Don't worry once we realize it, "you stupid moron"  is the first thing that comes to mind. :D

Last night I ordered a Nikon battery from a reputable store for $42, with shipping.  An hour earlier I watched folks bid the snot out of the same battery on Ebay; with shipping it went for $50.  I think it was only one of two genuine Nikon bats up for bid.  There were also a bunch of knock-offs; most weren’t getting bids, but a couple went for about $40.
