Read that the 'e' wing came out before D-Day.
'So' there 'may' have been LF IXe's (XVI) with invasion stripes.

Just yet to find a pic.

Diff matter -
Didn't the RAF goto VHF early 1941?
In which case should our V have the aerial wire?
Shouldn't it be contained wholly within the mast?

I think the problem is that the E wing was in production, but hadn't made it to the units yet.   I haven't been able to find any photos of a D-Day e wing either.  The only thing I have to to go on is that logbook where the Spit XIV pilot from 91 Squadron notes the arrival of the E wing XIV and that's July 14, 1944 for him and he was a Flight Commander so he'd have gotten one of the new one's first.

I'd love to find a photo showing an earlier e-winged bird on ops though.

I think you are right about the aerial too.  Hadn't even thought about it, but the photos show the lack of aerial wire on Vbs.  The mast doesn't have that notch on the top for it either.

Earliest image of a combat used E wing so far that I could find.

Well known photo of Geoffrey Page's Spit LFIXe in Normady.  This still puts it in July though as it has only the half stripes on the lower surfaces.  Thinking this is a full span wing too on the IX

Gonna keep looking though :)

I think even just having lower surface only stripes would at least give a 'new' skin variation on the XVI.

Finally got the SAAF LF IXe (XVI) sent in. :)

Totally inaccurate for a wartime Spit XVI as there were no bubble tops or high back XVIs in operations at that point.

Best best is the July LFIXe's
