My car sounds like a ricer...
« on: February 02, 2006, 12:32:12 AM »
...AND IT SUCKS.  I think the muffler is screwed up or something.  When I accelerate it sounds like there's a really pissed off bear under the hood of my car, getting louder when I push in the clutch.  Anyone have any idea's what it might be?  Just got a new catalytic converter in November or December.

Sounds like an exhaust leak or possibly a freeze plug has popped out. The worst of it could be a rod-a-knockin.....
Apparently, one in five people in the world are Chinese. And there are five people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my mum or my dad. Or my older brother, Colin. Or my younger brother, Ho-Chan-Chu. But I think it's Colin. - Tim Vine.

most likely exaust leak, as stated.  if its a front engine mounted ride, get underneath it and follow the exaust pipe from the enigne to the tail and see if there is a hole. muffler broken? not sure, but check it out. If the muffler was totaly broke it would sound worse than a bear under the hood, more like mini-nukes going off each time the cylinders fire, and the sound would be coming from the rear of the car.

not sure why putting the clutch in makes it worse, unless you're pumping the gas at the same time.

good luck.

I agree with the exhaust leak.  If you live where it gets cold, when you start your car in the morrning look under the car to see the exhaust leak.
It might be in your muffler...sometimes the cheep thin metal rust in your muffler first.

I had a 1992 toyota that had a muffler leak... i didnt fix it because i did not want to sink money into that car. within a month it broke my muffler in half.  Talk about loud!!!  I couldn't hear my self think during rides to work.  My muffler looked like a someone stuck a m80 in side and blew it up!

Its winter and the bears are in hibernation, so maybe there really is a bear under your hood.  I know if some dweeb in a Toyota agitated me while I was sleeping, I'd be plenty pissed off!

I'll get her checked out, I gave it a reliminary look at last night when i got home from work, need to throw her on a rack though and see what's happening.  If it's nothing too serious i'll have my step dad order the parts and fix her myself tomorrow.

Start it up,walk to the back, plug the muffler with your hand(wight wanna wear a glove).
If it is leaking you will be able to keep it pluged, plus you might  see where it's leaking from(or hear).
If by pressing the cluch it makes it worse than most likely it's the flex pipe,
but what do i know?

If the exhaust manifold is leaking the smell of exhaust under the hood would be the giveaway. The clutch behaviour is not very consistent with a leak though.

If exhaust manifold is leaking it will sound louder untill vehicle warms up.
If the crack is too big disregard it,same goes to exhaust manifold gaskets.

I think the muffler had come unbolted a little or something like that.  They didn't give me too detailed of information.  On the other hand I got a shiny new chrome cap for my tailpipe.

What I meant about the clutch was that when i disengaged it from the flywheel the noise would overcome the whole car.  When driving it would be a steady stream of noise, when disengaging it would just hit like a bomb.  Fine now though.
