I am curious. How much money do the players & teams make on average in these other sports? Rugby, Soccer, Criket, and such?

So who are the Finns playing in round 1? ... Oh wait... nevermind. :rofl

There's a small minority of us here that actually enjoy soccer & have been to cup games. Who knows, if there was actually some popular support for it, we could probably be really, really good... as opposed to just good enough to qualify for the world cup 8 times. Funny, we don't even have a national league. :)

Real Madrid are now the richest football club in the world, thanks in no small part to the marketing power of a certain David Beckham.  The president of Real Madrid actually joked he would sell their stadium before selling David Beckham...

Quote
Real Madrid's income since 2002 has increased notably, from €152m to an expected €300m for the 2005/06 season. Of that, almost half is due to come directly from marketing. These figures might also help explain why Real Madrid signed so many stars, including superstar David Beckham. The England captain is still the best paid football player in the world, according to a report published by France Football magazine. Beckham tops the table ahead of his team-mates Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane. The three each have salaries of €6.4m and collect €200,000 a year in bonuses, but Beckham's commercial endorsements and image rights increase his takings to €25m a year..

Quote
Sept. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Real Madrid said it ended Manchester United's eight-year reign as the world's biggest soccer team by revenue after signing players such as David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane.

Madrid's revenue increased 17 percent to 275.7 million euros ($332.2 million) in the year ended June 30, according to accounts mailed to club members this week. Bloomberg News obtained a copy of the documents. United, which hasn't published figures for that period, had sales of 169 million pounds ($298.6 million) for the year through July 31, 2004.

Look who they had to play in the Qualifying stages...

  Netherlands
  Czech Republic
  Romania
  Macedonia
  Armenia
  Andorra

Compared to the USA: -

 Mexico
 Costa Rica
 Trinidad and Tobago
 Guatemala
 Panama

You and Mexico were guaranteed spots in the finals ;)

We have a type of baseball game here, pesäpallo, but we're not arrogant enough to call the league a "World Series" or "World Championship" because it would be laughable...

We also have an ancient game called "Kyykkä" but nobody isn't interested about it... Maybe You could have it and have a "Kyykkä World Championship" :)

American style football I can understand when the NFL proclaims the winner of the Superbowl to be World Champions. Neither the Canadian league nor the league in Europe could hope to compete with the NFL.

The rest of the sports like Hockey, Baseball, Basketball etc....I think it's kind of ridiculous to call the league champions *World Champions*.

We actually agree on something Staga.....wonders never cease! :D

We have world championships for anything & everything. We have world poker championships, world pumpkin tossing championships (records past 4000 ft!), Women's Softball College World Championships, Junior Men's Amatuer Softball World Championships, Halo (yeah, the video game...) World Championships, World Inline Hockey Championships...

hey, we'll host it, if the other countries don't show up, that's their problem. :)

to Furball: Italy & the Czech's in our group? Yeah, we're going home early... unless somebody screws up majorly like that poor Columbian in '98. Damn I felt sorry for that guy. Oh yeah, and thanks for shooting me down on Sunday. Upped with squaddies since I was supposed to be down anyways, and on the run bounced a 262 in a 38 and set him on fire in the first burst. It's a strange day when Furball opens up the path to happiness... :noid

Dood you need to pay attention...it's called the Super Bowl...no one calls it a world championship. We tried a Soccer league back in the 70's. It had pele and alot of the other soccer superstars, it folded because no one here gave a chit. So feel free to knock yourself out with soccer. We use it here for little boys not athletic enough for sports.
