So, shoud I get TrackIR 4 or TrackIR3 with vectoring?

Yes, there are keys for toggle on/off & centering.
i have mapped these to my stick, but to my surprise i do not use the centering as much as i expected.

Both versions of Track ir use the same software and therefore should both work fine. The biggest difference is that TrackIr 4 has a greater field of view ( 46 instead of 33 degrees) so that you should be able to move a bit more, or you can position the camera a little bit easier.

I've had mine for 9 months. I don't like it in combat. I like it fine for just cruising around, but when the furball starts I invariably turn it off.

It also makes me motion sick, especially at first. Not so much now.

I fly 90% more with it off than on.

I'll probably sell mine in another 6 months.

For AH I think its not so big a deal, The view system is so good in this sim that while Track IR (with vector) is very nice it doenst really change the game(IMHO)
In IL2 howerer. Wow.
The view system in IL2 sucks and Track IR brings that game to life. If you have Track IR and IL2 and you have never tried the two together. Do it.

Ok, I will admit... track IR with vector is great for IL2.

For AH, get yourself nice controls with a couple good hats and you'll make out better.

Well, my purchase has just gone through and I should be getting the TrackIR Pro 4 soon.

So now, my set up will be:

32in widescreen HDTV 1360x768
CH Pro Rudder Pedals
Microsoft Precision Pro 2 Sidewinder Joystick
TrackIR 4 Pro
GeForce 4 Ti 4400 (overclocked to 295MHz from 250MHz)
Pentium 4 2.4GHz
1GB DDR 400
160GB 8MB cache Harddrive 133MHz 7200RPM
480W Power Supply
500W 5.1 Surround Sound System by Creative THX certified.

All I need now is a fighter stick and throttle by CH.  I'll get the throttle next in a few months.  And I'll wait until my microsoft joystick breaks before I buy the CH fighter stick.

Playing this game in a widescreen resolution caused clipping at the top and bottom.  I could not see many of the lower gauges, trim settings and had many blind spots due to this.  My SA was going down.  This TrackIR is the answer to my problem.  That is my reason for this purchase damnit!
Time's fun when you're having flies.

I dont toggle mine on and off. I have a button on my throttle that forces the forward view in combination with the TIR view.

Basically it "locks" your view in the forward view and doesnt allow any yaw or pitch inputs by TIR II. So when its time to fire, I hold down the button, and I know my view through the gunsite is "true". If you lose the site picture on the enema, just release the button and   your back tracking the target.

Toggling on and off is a pain in the rear end.

There is a key in AH for LOOK FORWARD (I think the default is NUM-8), if you hold this key down you look forward, and as with any view direction key (you can use TIR in conjunction with hat view for example), when you have a view direction key held down TIR automatically uses 'lean mode'...meaning you lean left right up or down, but dont turn your view.

I find that 90% of the time the large zone I have in the TIR profiler near the center means I can hold very steady, but on the occasions I want total lock down, I just have a key programmed to put it on hold (off), and use the hat views till Im done.

Just FYI, if you hit F9 while flying, the view system switches to the same snap mode as AH uses. :aok

Question I have for those that use it:

1.  Where do you place it, on top of the monitor or somwhere else?  The manual shows an ideal range of 24" and I sit closer than that to my monitor because of my desk with the joystick.  I would have to place it on the computer desks hutch shelf which is about 3" higher than the top of my monitor and it would have a slight downward angle to it.

2.  Do you wear a hat with the tracker gear attached or use something else?

Thanks

IR Placement
« Reply #29 on: February 21, 2006, 10:58:16 PM »
I place mine on top of my monitor. It sites about the same level as the top of my head. The Track IR4 has a baseball hat clip that has 2 reflectors on the brim and 1 back towards the head.

It sits about a foot from my head and works fine.

Definitely a good investment for the game. Now I dont die near as much..:aok
