Inter Continental "Conventional" Ballistic Missles

I picked up on this little tidbit in the middle of a article about US military contingency plans against Iran

"The Bush administration has recently announced plans to add conventional ballistic missiles to the armoury of its nuclear Trident submarines within the next two years. If ready in time, they would also form part of the plan of attack."

just what we need. things aren't near tense enough in the world.

do you suppose we'd sit back calmly and assume they were just conventional warheads if some other country(with nuke capability) started lobbing missiles into the air?

Getting a heavy load of conventional precise explosives on a target anywere in the world within 30 mins or so sounds great but what happens if one of the nukular armed nations starts to track several icbm's comming in their general direction? They need to get warned in advance and trust the warning they get that its only convenional, and that it wont hit them.

A few years back we came close to a nukular war just because some russian agency had not forwarded the message that we launched a test missile from Andoya. Small mistake... could have been a disaster.

Arming some of the Ohio class with 154 cruise missiles was a great idea, but im not so sure about this.

actually......I think (ICCBMs ) are a wonderful idea.

Too bad the USSR and USA never traded nuclear salvos. We wouldnt be having these problems today

I think ICCBMs are a horrible idea now though

if they found OBL how long would it take for a ICCBM to get to his location from the nearest trident and would he ever hear the thing coming, like a drone buzzing around? Suppose the tall one were hiding in a underground bunker.....how deep would an ICCBMs warhead be able to penetrate?

As far as Im concerned, the US military can never have too many weapons platforms or delivery systems.

I think we should get a whole bunch of those neutron bombs ready for action. What better way to preserve the oil fields for future sterwardship

Enough of a payload???? What exactly would a nuclear weapons package weigh in at....I don't know the weight and never would want to know but I would guess a nuclear payload probably topped out near 200-250 lbs. I do know that when a 500 bombs hits the ground there isn't a whole lot anyone near the blast is going to do but get scraped off the closest still standing wall or tree and it tends to make a pretty big hole in the ground.

That's a lot of money and effort to deliver 8 or so 500lb bombs.

The package would need to substantially redesigned, refined and tested. I guess I just don't see the value.

...'Course I don't own a company with an ICBM contract.

i thought the USA and Russia agreed to do away with MIRV's? Some disarmament treaty.

MIRVs are still in use… for example SS18 “Satan” carries 10 separate nukes together weighting 8 tons.
