Seafire IIc
« on: March 11, 2006, 11:57:06 AM »
Did some more digging around.

Merlin 46 - Only fitted to the original batch of Seafire IIc's, all subsequent fitted with the Merlin 32. The initial batch was then retro-fitted with the Merlin 32.

Could we possibly have our current rare IIc, changed to the more common (eventually all) Merlin 32?

Re the L III - One of the reasons against it was it wouldn't be useful.
The ONLY 2 scenarios ran up to now involving the Seafire would have used the LIII, not the IIc.
So it looks like it would have been more useful than the IIc.

Currently the AvA is using the Seafire IIc to sub for a Spit Vc, no Spit Vc used the Merlin 46, but they did use the Merlin 55M used in the LIII.
So looks as though an LIII would also be useful subbing for a LF Vc.

Differences externally - LIII has 4 bladed prop, 6 exahust stacks. Want to really make it look different to a IIc, clipped LIII landing -

Clipped wings weren't recommended for Seafires, at least that's what Jeffrey Quill told the RN. Dunno if they took heed though.

They clipped some AFAIK
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

They did, although I think only the L III's (prob because more powerful Merlin 55M)
Doing a skin for an 885 sqn Seafire L III used during D-Day to spot for ship guns, it was clipped.

Few unusual things about this one -
1) Clipped (mine wont be obviously)
2) Used std RAF camo (dark green/ocean grey/med sea grey) not FAA.
3) Carried D-Day stripes.
4) Had got a replacement tail and there wasn't time to paint it, so it's still in primer.

Early taster - still to make it a 'c' wing (modding my Vb template), and do lower D-Day stripes.
