Virus warning.
« on: January 04, 2002, 03:13:00 PM »
The day seems slow on this board, so here you go:

... biological viruses and computer viruses. In both cases they are parasitic self-replicating codes which exploit the existence of machinery that was set up to copy and obey that kind of code. So I then ask the question, "What if there were a third kind of milieu in which a different kind of self-replicating code could become an effective parasite?" Human brains ... seem to be a likely candidate. Then I ask, "What would it feel like if you were the victim of a mind virus?" Well, you would feel within yourself this deep conviction that seems to come from nowhere. It doesn't result from any evidence, but you have a total conviction that you know what's true ... You go around proselytizing and persuading other people to accept your view. The more you write down the features that such a mind virus would have, the more it starts to look like religion. I do think that the Roman Catholic religion is a disease of the mind which has a particular epidemiology similar to that of a virus.
------ Richard Dawkings

Remembering that while the above cited text obviously does not apply to the one true religion that you, dear reader, subscribe to - it explains how the rest of the religions and cults are really people infected by a virus-like phenomena because their minds' firmware has "security glitch" making them suceptible.

T dash is the biggest hipocrite up there!!!!  How in the hell can he say any of that after the Senate failed to do it's job?!?!  Bush should have called them back early from Christmas break.  It would be SO FREAKIN SWEET if dashhead would lose his next election bid.  Maybe just maybe we'll get lucky this fall and the dems will lose 2 or 3 seats.

Unless you regard the hypertrophied preoccupation with politics as a kind of religion  ;)

Read a sci-fi book a while back (can't remember the name) based on premise that knowledge was a virus. Supported the premise that knowledge, like bacteria or virus, propagates rapidly when threatened to ensure it’s own survival.

The book supposed that knowledge has increased dramatically in the last few decades because humans were close to self-annihilation. This dramatic increase in knowledge was toward the end of creating an AI thus ensuring knowledge survives man's demise.

Hey, I didn't say it was a good book.  ;)

I kinda like that virus theory..

There is no logical reason why people should be religious. All religions throughout time have exploited the biggest and chemically patchable security flaw in the brain: fear.

Fear of unknown, not being able to comprehend the vast universe and the random nature of the physical world. Fear of death, the big one.

Religions, be it catholic orthodox muslim whatever, have been feeding people with lies and exaggerations in order to make them believe their religion was the only way to 'survive out of life' and as long as they believe in their thing, nothing bad can happen to them. 'I shall travel in the valley of darkness .. etc etc. '

Heck, the christian church was convincing people for centuries that the earth was a flat pancake and anyone who dares to go near the edges will fall into a burning inferno.
They even tried to lynch the guy who dared to disagree with them. 'But it's still round'
