Interesting scenario?
« on: October 14, 2001, 04:08:00 AM »
Taliban says "We've had enough. We urged bin Laden to leave the country. Two days ago he did so. Through his contacts within Pakistan, he was able to cross the border into that country. His whereabouts is is now unknown. In addition, we have dismantled all terrorist camps (thanks to US iron <g> ). We are no longer a threat. We have nothing to offer. Come in and search for bin Laden yourself. What now do you want from us? Will you continue bombing us? Why?"

Now...

Did bin Laden *really* leave the country? Or is he even deeper in hiding? How would he then be found? How then could the Taliban's statement be proved false? And how then could the coalition forces justify continued bombing? If you assume (and you must) that this actually may indeed be true - where would you look for him? He could be anywhere on the planet by now. And the Allies are now seemingly bombing Afghanistan for... nothing? What would be your stated purpose in *continuing* to bomb?

What would you do?

If I were running the show, this scenario would be a hell of a problem. If I were a Taliban dude, I'd do just this. It would mess the Allies up big time. I'd even do it for a laugh... what would I have to lose?

Bigger question is... what would be the counter? Them mountains are pretty big, pretty vast... and from what I hear the tunnels are many and deep. Cease bombing and put thousands of guys on foot to undertake some kind of verification mission?

Hell... Why not light some poor martyr on fire, ship the Allies a charred and unrecognizable body and say "Congrats - you got him."

What then?

The Taliban could never hope to comply with the US demands (which are vague and non-specific). It's all designed that way.

The US wants the Taliban out, and won't stop until until this is achieved.

I hope they work out some kind of democratic replacement, rather than simply the war-lord based Northern Alliance.

1. Hand over Bin Laden
2. Hand over all Al-Queda (See FBI list)
3. Close all Terrorist Camps.

Ya...that's a real tough to understand, scandle ridden, covert plan.  Get real Dowding, the U.S. got sucker punched and those responsible are getting a couple jabs and an uppercut in return WITH WARNING.

US RESPONSE:

Well; Mr Taliban, seems we've had some new troubling evidence.. irrefutable video evidence, provided by the UN, that your regime is responsible for WAR CRIMES, MURDER, TORTURE and ETHNIC CLEANSING.

You may not negotiate. You may surrender to UN or Coalition forces for trial by the World Court. Or be destroyed by Coalition forces in detail wherever you may hide.

You pissed off the wrong Infidels; Taliban.

it may not be vague but it is imposssible and as stated, it is designed that way so we can continue bombing the piss out of these animals. Why do you think we are not assisting the Northern Alliance with direct air support of their offensive? How long do you think it'd really take us to over run that sandbox & out those babbling arse backwards Tail-in-the-bun "leaders" if we applied all of our resources? They'd be cave dwellers in less than 72 hrs if the US/GB wanted it that way. But then the rest of the Muslim world world we screaming for us to stop. Nah, I think we are dragging it out for a couple of reason, a major one being to allow Saddam the opportunity to put his military foot right square in his mouth and give us an excuse to flatten his arse too....

Russia the big winner here. They finally get to win the war they lost in the ‘80s. I was listening to Tony Snow subbing for Rush last week. He was telling the ditto heads that the Northern Alliance fought the Soviets back then. That’s not true. ALL the spook sites I visit like STRATFOR.com claim the opposite. Also Pakistan is not big on Northern Alliance and as part of the agreement with the US to use airspace, would not be the interim government.

Russia’s price for all this is to not include Ukraine and the Baltic states from joining NATO. Also, you can toejamcan that NMD idea.  My guess is we plan to double cross them later. That’s why your not hearing about it in corporate media.

Expanding the war to include other countries like Iraq has been pretty much shot down by Tony Blair and Kofi Annon of the UN. We could go it alone but that would mean loosing all our allies and not just in this adventure.

1. Hand over Bin Laden - Already split
2. Hand over all Al-Queda (See FBI list) - spread out over 64 countries including the country of Florida
3. Close all Terrorist Camps. - These are Bedouin style camel hair or yak hair tents.
I wonder if this includes the terrorist camps in Idaho and Montana.

4. Make Afhaganistin  safe for the Unical oil pipeline.. I mean lets be honest that’s the bottom line isn’t it? In order to do this you’d have to figure out a way to NOT breed a new crop of Bin Ladens.

Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see the Taliban removed and a democratic government put in its place.

But the Northern Alliance are a bunch of war-lord based thugs who fight amongst each other as much as against the Taliban.

Before the Taliban's ascension in 1996, Afghanistan was a state in anarchy. Women were attacked and raped in the streets. The West saw the Taliban as a stabilising force, because of their strict Islamic beliefs. Unfortunately, they turned out to be a bit too strict.

I hope the ordinary Afghan people get a decent government, not a bunch of warlords or a group of fanatics with a weird interpretation of a religious text.

well it would be like the iraq thing. probably some u.n. force there looking over sites and this time setting up a new gov't.

saying bin ladin was dead would mean u.n. occupation so they wouldn't get much out of it.

This is an opportunity for the UN to finally, actually DO something.

The Northern Alliance or the United Front... whatever.. are certainly no band of angels.

This is another case of supporting the lesser of two evils under the old "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" doctrine that we all know so well.

When the Taliban are out of power... and that's going to happen.... there's a chance for the UN to step in and take Afghanistan under its protection while some decent form of government is established. Ideally, the enforcement troops would come from countries that have had no hand in attacking Afghanistan but do have a good record in human rights at home and abroad. Easier to bypass all that enmity. Also, they should have a large Muslim contingent.

So, I vote for the Scandinavian countries and the <cough> moderate Muslim states to stabilize Afghanistan and begin the "nation building". Think we better put the Scandinavians in overall command though.

The US will do what it truly does best, of course. Throw money at the problem.   ;)

Heck, we'll be doing that anyway.

Damn.. hell yeah; Toad, we're up to 50 billion smackers to play whack the mole already.

Hey; just saw one of those takling heads mention something about Annon and the UN winning the Nobel Peace Prize.. wouldn't it be wonderful if they actualy did something now to deserve it?

Like maybe invade, occupy and administer Afghanistan, and wow, get this... get Iraq to submit to those inspections the UN mandated.

Yah.. I know; a pipe dream. *sigh*

Whack-a-mole isn't a cheap game. What'd cost to play it 60 years ago? What'd it cost to rebuild the "mole holes" after that one was over.

Kiss your bucks goodbye, Hang. The big ole deficits are just around the corner and they stretch to the end of my lifetime, I'd guess.

So, forget money.

Afghanistan is going to have to have a new government and the <patoo> UN is the "best" organization for the job.

We really can't be in on it other than to supply the $ like we usually do....
