After purchasing my ne MOBO (Kn8 ultra) i was horrified to see there was no AGP slot. Then I was calmed ro see thee was a PCI express slot. I figured this was AMD compatable MOBO's answer to the agp 8x slot. BUt apparently I am wrong. Am I giving up anything with the PCI express slot, or is this the new wave?

It is 16X speed. You have but only speed to gain from AGP.

Actually that's mostly marketing hype masherbrum. PCIe exists purely for cost beneficial reasons.

The fact that video card bus speeds are massive compared to the rate at which a CPU can supply them with data also supports the fact that AGP should not be dead; the market will kill it, however.

Well in theory it will eventually let cards go faster than the limits of the AGP port.

In theory.

In practise, there is very little if any difference between them at this point.
Given that your using the same card in agp & pci configuration.

However, in 2 years, having a PCI-E slot means you'll be able to upgrade to the latest & best if you want. AGP means your stuck with what you've got.

The man wins a cookie. It is considerably cheaper to build a motherboard using PCIe versus AGP.

What aspect?

It is cheaper due to the PCIe bus being serial, requiring fewer traces than the parallel AGP bus. Less power as well as there are far fewer transistors involved is a serial bus versus a parallel bus.

All of that translates into lower costs. It is one of the driving forces pushing for a serial bus on all that is I/O.

AGP will die because PCIe is pushed by the industry, its cheaper and has some potential to implement faster chipsets.

Currently, as everyone has pointed out, it does not provide and technical advantage but the market made the transition and its hard to get AGP graphic boards of the newest generation. The next generation of graphic cards will be PCIe only... no more AGP.

Expansion Cards where thought to transit to PCIe too but that didnt work so far, to many people use their current PCI cards. Motherboard makers already have cut down on PCIe (x1 and x2)slots on the boards cause no one uses them.

Add to that PCI-E cards generally have less layers also.
Shame that it hasn't really translated into cost savings for end users.

It's not about saving money for the customer. It is about increasing profit margins for the motherboard and computer manufacturers. Quite intentional as they have a firm grasp on what the market will bear.

Out of curiousity, will PCIe cards ever be as high dollar as AGP cards were in their prime? For example, when the x850 (I think it was anyway) came out it was around 700 wasn't it? I never got one though, I'm still using my 9800 pro. But, next upgrade will likely be to PCIe as it will be a pita to get a decent AGP card.

LOL high price tag . Take a look at an OC'ed 7800 GTX. Or the Dual gpu 7800gtx. It will scare you.
