Thanks for the information Widewing. I'd waded through "The Fabulous Fifty-Seventh Fighter Group of World War II" and every photo including the color had that complete red nose band.
I'm guessing that they must have reapplied the anti-glare over the red then as I think it's still showing a bit through the OD and I'm also betting at some point they added the red to conform to the group markings when time permitted.
But, based on the discussion here, I'd definately stick with the original OD anti-glare over the red.
