noob question
« on: July 11, 2009, 07:50:17 PM »
i always seem to open fire at too long of a range.

what range would be practical to open fire at?

also

at what ranges do you set your gun convergence?

I rarely open fire on moving targets beyond D400, and I prefer D200.

All of my guns are set to 300 yards with the exception of those on the Me 262A-1a.

You'll probably get nearly as many answers about convergence as replies to this post, for most people it's a matter or preference and flying style. It also depends a lot on the plane you're flying.

My guess most range in the guns on the American planes around 300-400 although I've known plenty of people that are shorter in and even further out.   The .50 cal on most those planes has excellent ballistics in the game and still hits pretty hard at those ranges.  A good burst can still damage outside of that but it starts to drop off.  I think most people who fly cannon armed planes probably set there's a little closer because generally speaking the cannons can be a little harder to hit with because of poorer ballistics (generally) and lower ROF, and having less ammo on board to mess around with.  The upside is of course when they do hit it's a lot harder than a simple MG round.

I usually don't fire until D400 or less..preferably 200

I set all my guns at 250 or 300

This is mainly personal preference

Too many variables to answer that question, it depends where the guns are mounted, what type of guns they are (cannon vs MG), the size of the round, and even the country of origin of the gun.

Here is some info to read...

Until you've been in game for a while and really developed a feel for what your style is its hard to go wrong with 300.

Try to keep  most of your shooting within 100 of wherever your set to.

Most people don't set guns the way I do so you'de probably be best off taking someone else's advice but I set all my guns for 600 yards except Russian and Japanese guns, British .303's and any 7.9mm's which I set at 400.  If I've got a mixed gun pacakge where I'd normally set some at 400 and others at 600 I might do that or I might pull them all in to 400.  It depends on the plane.  Normally I set all my guns to point convergence.

Depending on the situation I might open fire as soon as I cross 1000 yards but I prefer to wait until I hit 400 yards.

I maintain a hit% over 10% (currently over 13%) doing this but it's the set-up I've used since the beginning so it's what I'm used to.

As I said, you'de probably be better off taking someone elses advice.  I only post to illustrate the wide diversity of what people use in the arenas.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

Also on convergence, it worked for me but idk how it will work for others. I had all my 50 cal wing mounted planes all at the same convergence "350",I could fly all them and get somewhat good shooting

With nose mounted guns I will fire from as far out as 1K and be able to hit accurately.  It just takes practice.

I try not to shoot farther than ~400 with wing mounted guns.
