Frame Rate Drop in Bomber Gun Positions
« on: March 23, 2006, 09:18:45 AM »
Flying the new B-17 I noticed on each of three missions a dramatic drop in frame rate the instant I press the trigger from any of the gun positions.  My normal frame rate is 40+ under most any circumstance, and it was dropping to between 9 and 12 every time I pulled the trigger.  Let up on the trigger and it would jump back to the high 20s and wind up back over 40.  The foul aspect of this is that planes flying in very close (less than 600) would appear to fly in a stuttering manner, making it all but impossible to try and train on them.

So, I'm wondering if this is a result of the new "gun shake" feature or ???
Is it supposed to do that?

Other things have caused a loss of frame rate, but NOTHING like that has ever happened before.

ADDENDUM:

A later flight in a B-26 did drop the frame rate, but not nearly as bad as I experienced in the B-17.  At the time of the B-26 flight, there were not as many users in the arena, and I don't know if this was a factor or not.

Anyone else having this problem, or anyone have any ideas what I might do to counteract this?

Try going into your video setup in-game and turning off gun effects. That will reduce shell casings, and maybe gun smoke.

Then go in and turn off tracers.

I suspect (but am not sure) that part of it is that you're getting rather low fps to begin with, and that you just can't handle the b17s and all their 3D detail at the same time as you are shooting 16+ guns all at once.

I had similar problems in the B24 when it first came out, but I was dropping from 60fps to 5fps, so that's a larger difference. That was fixed a patch or two later, if I recall. Perhaps this will be tweaked as well.
