Random Engine Performance
« on: March 28, 2006, 10:42:27 AM »
I think it would be interesting to have aircraft perform at -5% to +5% of thier historical maximums at random upon upping.  It would add the realism of an aircraft which simply doesn't perform well and the benefits of a good mechanic.

Maybe aircraft closer to the front, perform towards the -5% while aircraft upped from secure airfields perform towards the +5%.  Seems to seem realistic as aircraft on the front would not be able to be given the care that aircraft in secure territory would be given.

What do you guys think?

personally, i dont like it. sorry.

in my opinion it should be a level playing field for all, where skill is the factor which determines the result, not a computer variable.

I've always thought they shoul model in random engine failure/oil leaks/coolant leaks for Combat Tour (or whatever its called now), but I don't see how you could impliment it without 75% of the players whining up a storm about it.
Treize (pronounced 'trays')- because 'Treisprezece' is too long and even harder to pronounce.

Sometimes it's better not to make the game too realistic

I wouldn't mind this. Here's what I'd do:

Click takeoff.
Shove throttle to the stops.
Check rpm's & MP... mmmhmmm, 2% low.
Slam brakes, click tower.
Repeat until rpm's & MP are 3% higher than normal or better.

Might take me 5 to 10 tries to make the dice roll in my favor, but eventually they will.

You wanna play against me on an even field, or with me padding my dice rolls?

No, I don't play the game to waste time with a random number generator.  I have enough of a challenge with my lack of skills against skilled fliers.

No thanks.

Forgotten, but back in the game.  :)

Didn't expect the responses to be so vehement...

I hadn't considered someone constantly re-upping to get a higher performing engine.

Wasn't all that vehement actually. Seen threads go way further downhill much faster :) To put alittle perspective on it though, the whole point of the wishlist is to post ideas and let people shoot holes in it. Don't take it personally, the supposed goal in hear is to keep it all balanced between the gamey rules lawyers, realism nazis, trolls, and make it fun for everybody.

Your idea itself isn't all that bad, but imho, there's better implementations. I'd be much more fond of degrading engine performance once your WEP period is exceeded. Instead of simply making it a complete on/off proposition, allow it to run past the timer at an ever increasing risk of engine degradation all the way up to total failure. Overall, I think it would have the potential to increase the duration of fights, with consequences. The downside I see to it would be that after losing your oil, it'd be more dangerous trying to manage engine heat when limping home. Let it get too hot without being able to glide for a bit, and you'll have even less power available to get you to base. Also, non-WEP aircraft would gain zero advantage, and only receive punishment for engine heat.

Pros (assuming speed does = life):
Gamey people could fight longer
Furballers would get to fight alittle longer
Appeases realism dweebs by adding an element to engine management
Would still be a simple system for newbies to grasp

Cons:
Damaged flights home potentially more difficult
Non-WEP aircraft receive 0 benefit, while still suffering from more damage penalties.

Hey, that's a good idea Indy.

I've often wondered, does AH model weather in relation to plane performance?  Like temperatures?

if people dont like the idea, then they should make it an option to have that in the game, there should be a big vote, every1 in fave in the Random Engine Performance say yes, everyone who is not, say no

Yeah, have a vote...  It would carry less weight than a gnat's purse.
