...thousands of workers taking to the streets to protest new hiring laws...

What's going on over there?  Just caught the tail end of that news broadcast.  Heard something about new laws allowing workers to be fired without cause?

the law in France now says that new hires cannot be fired for the first 2 years, because of that employers are reluctant to hire young people they will not be able to fire if they do not work out. The new law is to encourage employers to hire more young people.

unemployment of young people in france is at 25%.

Harsh that an employer has to be stuck with a ****ebag for two years.

Expecting a "white flag" on this issue at any moment.

more nannyism at it's best.  WHy not let business make they're own rules and the market will correct itself.  This is what happens when you over-regulate with rules that do no one any good even if they have the "best of intentions"

Business making its own rules produced such wonders as sweatshops and 12 hour/6 day work weeks.

I'd rather not trust the well-being of society to a group of people who care only about profit at any cost.  France might take things too far in the opposite direction, but an unregulated economy certainly doesn't make for a happy place to live.

I hope like hell that the French civil authorities get the situation under control and the immigrant population takes a deep breath and adresses the issues within itself that isolates them from the rest of the french population.

No nation.. theirs, ours... deserves to have itself attacked from within by a group that resuses to assimilate into the culture of it's host nation.

How this goes down in France may well be a prelude to what we face here in the near future.

Hang in there, Froggies.. I'm with yah.

I don't think this issue has anything to do with assimilation or immigration. It is about unions and labour laws.

I tend to disagree.. but I'm evaluating a bigger picture inclusive of the culture war going on there which I consider to be the root cause of the unrest and violence.

Could be wrong though.. just looks that way to me.

Like anyone here is against child labor laws or any kind of labor laws but if you want to go there than sure unrestricted business does have its downside but eventually you will end up with an employees market where business has to cave to the demands of workers in order to have a labor force that's effective.  When you have a 25% unemployment rate the problem isnt that businesses are being unfare its that your economy sucks period.

Has the government raised the surrender flag yet? I imagine the spoiled youth will set fire to a few more cities to get thier way..

" These young people in France really believe that they should be able to be hired at their tender ages and that a company must not be allowed to fire them from their first day at work (except "for cause," which, as we are learning in America, is increasingly difficult to establish).

Socialism teaches its citizens to expect everything, even if they contribute nothing."

Totally wrong. The law as it is for some times now is : new hires can be fired for the first 6 months without justification or compensation, at all ages. Company can fired employes after those 6 months only if there is a proof of failure or serious mistake. They can also fired if they are in bad economical situation.

The law that  made everyone on stike is : if your under 26 years old, you can be fired without justification for the first 2 years.

to be more precise,  its about the failure of socialism... about the way French govt is a huge employer and subsidizer, and how these people tend to look at jobs as entitlements.  Its obvious, what France needs is a huge injection of healthy capitalism ....

So ths is another thread which is going to degrade to more French bashing.  Ouaibe pretty much answered the question.  The rest is drivel and not related to the topic.

Getting really tired of these country bashing (any country) threads.
