Irony hits home
« on: September 29, 2000, 12:11:00 PM »
I was sitting at a stop light a couple of days ago on my way to the hardware store.  The street I was on is divided down the middle by our local train called the "Max".  The signal had not changed in a timely manner because a Max was coming from the other direction.

About this time I heard a siren and spotted a fire truck coming from the crossroad.  Everyone at the intersection stayed put (lights had just changed but nobody went) as the Firetruck neared the signal.. verified nobody was going.. then plowed through.

He went through about 100 yards in front of the Max and proceded on his merry way.  I doubt he ever saw it.  At that time, I commented to my wife that I did not believe those fire engines were even looking for the Max to be coming when they crossed the tracks.

The very next day at the very next intersection a Max broadsided a firetruck (most likely the very same truck).  Fortunately, everyone was OK (1 guy on the train was injured).

Have you ever read Catch-22? I'm sure Joseph Heller had a word for that kind of thing, not 'Deja' Vu, but 'Presque' Vu or something. Might be wrong.

Perhaps you should change your name, DejaVu?

LOL! I've never read the book.. but I've seen the movie.  Running under the standard formula.. that would make the book excellent (since the movie was great).

Unfortunately, I'm not really into reading stories from that era (date written.. not period written about) so I doubt I'll get around to it.

Hadn't really occured to me about my ID having anything to do with the irony... hehehe.. even more ironic.

If you ever read one book in your life, it has to be Catch-22!!!   I'm not kidding when I say it is the best book I have ever read; probably the best book written this century except 1984 maybe. It's long, and at first his writing style is a little bewildering - but once I started I literally couldn't but it down. Everyone in the book is completely insane! And the war setting is quite interesting; some of the things that happen must have come from Heller's own war experiences. I was lol literally at it quite often - not something I do with books that often. Very moving in places also. I can't recommend it enough. I want to see the film but haven't had chance.

He wrote a sequel called Closing Time shortly before he died last year.

I thought when you said the fire-truck thing was ironic, you meant your name!!! hehehe   Sort of reverse deja vu.
