I think the biggest problem here is the fact that both are called "football" but actually bear no resemblance, other than the presence of humans playing the game and something ball-shaped being involved.

True, most Americans find soccer (forgive me, I must use the term) damned boring to watch. But it is the most popular sport amongst kids in the U.S. to play. Hell, I love playing. It's a lotta fun. But we've (Americans) grown up with the tension of a 3rd & long play that could decide a whole season. It's a different game, treat it as such. Don't compare.

I can't believe you think that calling 'soccer' (that is awful) football, is a misnomer!!? You use your 'foot' to kick a 'ball' 95% of the time - hence the name.

You can't say the same about American Football.

MrFish - I don't know how many games you've actually watched, but having two shots on goal rarely happens.

Dowding, if you are talking about my post, I didn't say that it shouldn't be called "football". It should. American, gridiron, blood in the trenches "football" shouldn't be called that, but, what can you do?. We need to be able to differentiate it somehow here in the states. Hence us calling it "Soccer". I hope that makes sense. I know it doesn't to me.

well dowding...... my former roommate, in addition to being unemployed and drunk 99% of the time, was a definite yelling, slobbering, trivia spewing sports fan and i often caught a game on the weekends when i was too lazy to fight for the tv. in the 7-10 games of 'football' i suffered through i probably saw about 20 or 30 shots on goal.

so what if you disagree about the number - just consider the effect- the scores without a goalie would be like 10 to 15 or 5-9 it would be a lot more interesting than 1-0 - the only thing more boring than 'football' is hockey....gimme 'mercan football!

Kidcol - I wonder how it got the name American Football? I guess it must have something to do with it being a derivative of Rugby Football, and the name just stuck.

Where does the word 'soccer' come from
anyway?

MrFish - come to England and come with me to watch my side. We regularly let 3-4 goals in every saturday. You'd find it very entertaining and you'd also learn how not to play a game of football  .

I don't know how much you know about English league football, but my team (Sheffield Wednesday) were relegated from the Premiership last season. At the moment we are second from bottom in Division 1. That can only mean one thing... we are going down again.

Heh 2-4 shots on goal?

You must have been very drunk.

Check the stats of any given game - there's a lot more than that.

Anyone who says soccer hasn't got much action, yet adheres to sports like basseball or American football and claims it does is delusional.

I can appreciate (now) American football - but only because I've forced myself to sit through the initial boring period. Still bugs me with all the pauses, but the action is getting good.

With soccer, you have great contra attacks. You have the midfield masterminding attack. Fluid, real time strategy implement by the players as they go - it's more player based than American football.

Both have their good sides and bad sides, but soccer definitely has a lot of action in it, and the strategy is very advanced.

Don't believe me? Watch a game from 1960. Compare to now.

Dowding,
The Brits came up with the name 'soccer'!  It's a bastardization of Association Football.  Was done to distinguish football from rugby, since both were known as footbal back then.

Alittle nurturing lesson:

If I was brought up with Soccer as a televised, highly visable sport on my TV, in my school, in my state, I would probably be a soccer fan.

However,American Football, hockey, baseball was the 'favorite sport'...therefore, nurturing had alot to do with my preference and I certainly wouldn't lower my standards to disrespecting someone elses preferences.

I've always found playing with the girls far more interesting than playing with the boys...

lol MrFish. Vive la difference.   At least in football, you don't get teams moving across the country - they still have some link with their locale over here.

Rugby is good...

...especially when England whacks Wales for six (mixed metaphors aside  ).
