Fx-60 unlocked
« on: April 03, 2006, 03:26:22 PM »
I am getting my hands on a FX-60 that is unlocked. What i was told that i should overclock and get chip rocking. The person that is pc god said that i should have something like 2x the pc speed with over clocking. That sounds like over kill so i am just looking for alittle. I quess that amd does not sell these chips over the counter. Am i going to need special cooling? What would you do in this case? I need to make a list because the chip will be at my house on friday..

All of the FX series are have their multipliers unlocked from the factory , so im not sure what "MOD" has been done to the chip your getting . As far as overclocking, the FX-60 you might get to 3ghz on air (up from 2.6ghz stock) but really anything above that you will need water or phase . The highest ive seen is 3.6ghz on phase change,  2X overclocking  is a pretty big exaggeration. hehe      38

Why bother overclocking?

Your getting a dual core @ 2.6Ghz per core $1000+ CPU.

Top end dual core Athlon, wouldn't even bother overclocking it.

But they are over the counter, $1000+!!!!!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103608&CMP=OTC-pr1c3watch&ATT=19-103-608

Me - I'd get some DDR500, set HTT to 1000 (4 x 250), set the fsb to 250 use a lower multiplier to bring it back down to close to stock speeds.
Then watch it SCREAM along.

Reason -
DDR500 = 2 x 250
fsb = 250

My BIOS lists 1000 and 800 as HTT settings, so -
@fsb 200 : 1000 = 5 * 200 (fsb)
@fsb 200 : 800 = 4 * 200 (fsb)

So if I was to fit DRR500 I would set my HTT to 800 (multiplier x4) because 4 x 250 = 1000.

Watch your bandwidth go through the roof :) .

Thanks i was looking at some 500 ddr2 today and bought some corsair. Only got 1g so i do need some more after i get that in. I think the over clocking is something one day i will do but their is no need today. Its free so i was going to push it but i think i will leave it alone.

BTW this guy said that 4.0 mzh is stable on his system (: I dont question him..

what the heck is a mzh? Did you mean 4.0Ghz? If so then he must have had a kick butt water or phase cooling rig.

Id put that baby on water and go for it ...

:D

i could see it now ... 1 gallon tank , 3 quart 3row radiator, 3/8's inch hoses , and a ice chest (for the gallon tank to sit in )  dri ice optional . And build a custom 3 box layered case for keeping the water /hard drives /mb vc ect seperated for ultimate cooling.

(id probely end up with stock in crucial for how much ram id get , along with put in the dog house by Mrs Roo) :t

Got 1 more gig of ram today. I am looking at some new boxs with extra cooling. If they have some water cooling for a good price at fry's i will go ahead and get it. I can sell my video card to a friend for $200 and get a new 7800 but i really do like my 6800gt so much that i was thinking of just keeping it. I was told today that this is the last chip with pins for amd. I looked at the new chips and they are flat with small golden contacts. Wild!
He said that chip was 1 our 1 1/2 years out before it hits the market.

Rosco, i'm actually thinking of the ice chest setup for summer , just run my lines in coils  through the ice and see what happens.  It's been great up here in buffalo this winter , my two radiators are in the window sucking in below 0f air hehe. Poor mans phase change 8).

FX , if your looking for a decent cooling setup  that comes ready to go , the thermaltake 745 is  good setup , it has 1X120mm and 1X240mm radiator , with 3 120 mm fans , 100+gallon per hour pump/resevoir combo , and 3/8th's tubing .   38

That Bigwater is a sweet setup ..

 I build my own water cooling systems .  the time involved doesnt upset the cost of a premade system though  but its fun all the same ... The boss looking over my shoulder as I head back to the mill packing a Block of Copper .Saying "now what in the hell are ya doing w/ that ? " ....

or better yet my latest packing  old bicycles that i chopped all up ...and made Peddles outta them .. That really got the looks .

For the extreame "phase" cooling  All I did was pack my resevoir in ice and added a 8 foot coiled hose from the radiator to the resevoir for added cooldown time and more volume  .. I think i was at 5 or 8 deg C when I had my old barton up at 3.5 ghz
also too much antifreeze slows down the super fast cooling .. I used water weter in mine and a touch of Alchohol ..

I can recomend   just putting the resevior in a ice chest and pack the chest ..
(ps Dont forget the Beer )  beware of condensation though if  the humidity goes  way up .
