Unable to play because of the update
« on: April 03, 2006, 12:14:33 AM »
"Since the update I can't fly at all. Its all fine til someone uses Vox. That is when my screen locks up.

My system is:

AMD Athlon XP 3200+
(ASUS A7N8X-E)
2.19 Ghz, 1.00 GB RAM
Radeon 9800 PRO
NVidia NForce2 IDE Controller
NVidia NForce MCP Networking Controller
SiI 3112 SATARAID Controller
Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 677.54 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB

I just reformatted the thing so I don't have extra programs running in the background, my Spybot S&D says the system is clean as a whistle, and I have all the latest drivers, but I still can't even sit in the tower for 2 minutes before someone talks and I lock up, get the black screen, and crash to desktop.

I've gone through the support board countless times, tweaked my sound settings, double checked my "wave in" button, and called hitech at least 3 times, but this problem is still at the same place it was since the update!

Can anyone think of anything, suggest anything, heck, can anyone loan me a system that can run with this update, so I can fly again?? Having major withdrawals here!!!

This is what I originally posted in the Tech Support thread, and was given the following options:

turn off any other processes
roll back my current drivers and find/use older ones

I've reformatted my system yet again, clean-slated it, took the suggested advice regarding processes and drivers, and my system not only crashes like it did before, but is now actually a bit worse.

In the last few years I've probably spent close to $3000 on computers to run this game, my latest system having been professionally built and less than a year old.

When I had it built, I familiarized the "builder" with the specs of the game, what and how I would be using it, and was assured the system would not only rock on for Aces (and even more intense games), but would also last for several years before needing any major rehauls... (processors, etc)

Do I now own a $1500 paperweight in my livingroom where Aces High is concerned?? This is the 3rd time I've hit a brickwall, (the first 2 forcing me to buy new computers) and now that I've had this one built for me, I'd really like to know that for me to continue to play Aces, I won't have to go buy/have built a 4th system!!

I LOVE this game and want to continue playing it for years to come, but I'm needing some major help here!!

Sounds like a memory issue or a defective component.

The system is enough to run AH on no problem, but shouldn't lock or crash like you state. If it is a "fresh" load of the OS (which is what BTW?) it should run fine. The Radeon 9800Pro is a tad dated by todays standards, but again should run the game decently.

Hopefully some of this helps.

p.s. I'm in WA also, I might be able to help you out.

If you downloaded the patch you may have that problem.

Try downloading the whole game, copying your settings folder elsewhere, uninstalling your current AH2 game, reinstalling the whole game, and copying your settings folder back into the AH2 folder.

directx sound set to 3/4 instead of FULL?

seems like might be the answer, you did not mention anything about doing this yet

I have the same processor, same amount of ram and the same video card. The game runs fine with that card. It would not cause the game to crash.

1. You might want to check that the correct motherboard NVidia chipset drivers are installed - and installed correctly. Uninstalled or incorrectly installed drivers would lock up the game like you said.

2. Sound cards are screwy sometimes. What sound card? if you're using Onboard sound, see 1. above!

3. I would say you have a bad motherboard, if you have the chipset drivers installed correctly.

Damnname,

The one piece of info we do not have that would help is what sound card you have. It really sounds like a sound card issue. Is it on board or a card? For the most part on-board sound is a bad thing. If it's a card and if you can get your hands on a replacement card even borrow a cheap one try swapping them out and see if the problem stops.

It can also be a resource issue.  What video settings are you using in the game?

If i remember right the A7n8x-e has onboard Soundstorm by nvidia , its one of the best onboard soulutions availiable.  I had the identical system a couple of years ago , the best drivers i found for the 9800pro with that setup were the 4.12 catalysts (or omega 4,12's ) . Do a fresh install of your Nvidia chipset , and sound  drivers, then do your 9800 drivers (4.12) . Another thing to look for is IRQ's , make sure your video , sound , and nic arent all sharing one IRQ .  You can find this by right clicking my computer/ properties / hardware /device manager/ View /resources by connection /IRQ's .      GL 38

ill post here to for ya ..

ive got close to the same setup as you Damnname

a7n8x-e dlx
2500 M barton at 2.4ghz
2x 512 3200 in dual
Ati 9600 pro
420watt enermax ps

One thing though is im running a custom win98se OS

my drivers are
the 4.12 cats for the ati card (these work the best)
the 4.27 International nividia drivers for the mainboard
and the stock driver for the marvel lan

my sound excelleration is set to max and i dont get any lock ups ....
in the previous verson of ah (2.06) i had to set my 5.1 speakers down to 2 speakers because my vc transmit would quit after 20 times or so .. since this last patch i havent had that problem for some reason .

you may have to turn down your sound excelleration one notch and use 2 speakers in the nvmixer .

this is the DamnWoman (the wifey) and since I'm the one who's been tweaking the system, I thought I should go ahead and post...
When replying, please use basic computer illiterate speak for me  lol

Yes, our sound is onboard by Nvidia and because the man uses headphones, we have the settings down and the excelleration set down to 3/4.

As for the IRQ's, there are only a few are shared, which are as follows:

(PCI) 20 NVidia nForce MCP Networking Controller
(PCI) 20 Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
(PCI) 21 NVidia(R) nForce(TM) MCP Audio Processing Unit
(PCI) 21 OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
(PCI) 21 Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
(PCI) 22 Nvidia(R) nForce(TM) Audio Codec Interface
(PCI) 22 Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller

I basically have no idea how to do a fresh install of the chipset, and am equally lost when it comes to finding older drivers to install. There was a time when I could do this, but with all the distractions around our home (new baby), I no longer have time to sit and ponder things through...
If anyone would be so kind as to walk me thru this in a step by step fashion, we would be ever so grateful!!!

You can get 4.12 based Omega drivers here. They work well on the 9800

Over on the left side, quick menu is the archive.
