I don't get it....  Isn't spying a legitimate part of gameplay?   If it weren't then why is it so easy to do?   It is part of the game is it not?   Is there a rule against it?

Isn't it "historical"  I would think the 'win the war' types would find this realistic and historical aspect of WWII well worth nurturing.

I think it is a great help.... I applaud the spies if they keep me from taking off in an area that the enemies of fun will be around.

laz is right, there is no rule against it and thats why its so easy to do. It's also historically correct, and the topic has been beat to death many times on these boards, always with the same outcome- no change.:noid

Ahhh, but its not the destination thats important, its the journey getting there!  These threads are so much fun!  Nobody has boiled over and blown up yet, so no one has really struck a nerve yet.  Still waiting.  :)

When we could talk to the other chess pieces on open channel w/o using ch200 it was easy to misdirect the enemy by 'accdently' calling for a goon or jabo's to a field you were feigning an attack on.

These days there's no way to 'accidently' leak that kind of info unless you know who on your side will inform the enemy of your intentions. These days we have the equivalent of super spys who have access to what would be the most protected info in a time of war.

To call this level of spying historical is the same as calling our gameplay in the MA a true recreation of WW2. Neither are correct.

A call for the summary execution of known spys would add a bit of realisim but that option is only given, and rightly so, to the moderators and HTC staff. Until you see HT, Skuzzy or Pyro start locking the accounts of these scoundrels the argument is truly moot.

Just fly and have fun, paying $15 monthly and getting PO'd by other players actions isn't a very good recreational investment, IMO.

BINGO!

There are really only two things spying can accomplish that looking at the map cant.

Revealing the location of a captured CV. (I've always felt you should be using it and not hiding it)

Revealing Info on NOE missions. And with most NOE missions they can be spotted on the map long before they ever reach their targets.
so really that only leaves 1 and only sometimes the second.

I do it all the time Simply by paying attention to the map.
Here's is often what I see to tip me off of an NOE mission.

I see a dar bar upping at what is normally an insignificant (at the moment)base. That darbar suddenly disappears or appears, disappears and appears and disappears over again a few times.
This tells me something is upping from that base as the planes up they appear on dar for a breif moment then that dar goes away as they get back down under dar.
So I start looking at the map at what might be a likely target.

Most of the thinking here strat wise is pretty simplistic and one dimensional so its usually not hard to narrow down the  likely bases to one or two. Then I start watching the map for other telltale signs.
Invariably someone will either screw up and pop up on dar briefly or I notice things like Facilities flashing with no darbar showing in their sector.
Now This will make me even more curious and also tells me the general heading of those under dar planes and I will radio out about a potential attack inbound on such and such a base.

From that point if in range to accomplish it in time I will head my flight to the area to invstigate and look for cons which usually bcause of their size, show up quite nicely against the water or ground even at long distances.

Remember if your in a large mass, your going to be easier to spot then a lone plane (me) Therefore I am often able to see you. without you seeing me.

Having been part of missions  I know that people in them are often running their mouths more then paying attention and looking out for potential enemy dots. And even if the dots are spotted often people show poor radio dicipline and are talking so much about non mission stuff that the person who spotted it cant get a word in edgewise to let anyone know
Once spotted I will send out a warning on radio about the impending attack and either get closer to see if I can make out the general force composition and possibly attack it or I wont and simply head parallel with it radioing out its current heading and try to nail as many as I can while they are attacking using my alt to my advantage

Other missions are so slow to develop because of force composition and alt requirements of the planner they might as well announce on 200 where they are headed.
They are more then obvious. Your not going to make an above dar attack and not have it noticed unless your on the fringes of the map where there isnt alot of activity. And all it takes is one person to spot you well before you reach your target to radio out your current location, alt and heading to screw up your plans.

If your not attacked in route on above dar runs. Its not because the spies failed and  you were successful in keeping it a secret. its because people didnt feel like stopping what they were doing to go after you until it was too late.
And on under dar runs its usually because nobody was paying attention to oddities on the map.Or because you actually ran a decent plan. Not because the spies didn't succeeed.

EXACTLY!  I think all this crying about spying is stoopid.  Even more calling it cheating is even more stoopid.  It's not like they are trying to create an atom bomb.  Sheesh.

Dok what secrets are the spy getting away with that has your panties all bunched up in your crack??

The solution to being spied upon is really quite simple..If you don't like your personal/squadron activities telegraphed to the enemy by your own teammates and don't like having head-hunters vectored to your location, stop conducting yourselves in a manner that draws contempt from your fellow players. If you insist on pissing in the face of acceptable community standards of conduct, be very prepared to have your face pissed in as well..This may seem harsh, but it's just the way in-game justice works.

Think of it like the rapist or child molestor going to prison. The first thing that happens to him is the guards and warden look the other way and he gets the total living crap beat out of him...Just reward for his anti-social behavior...Toolsheddeing griefers are like the rapists and child molestors of AH. Be very, very  carefull, the furballers are all carrying 'shanks'. ;)

but.... isn't the object of the game to make it as misserable an experiance as you can for as many people as you can so long as you play by the rules?

aren't spies a really cool thing for newbies with little talent to do?   You can't expect them to buy a joystick and this game does have a very steep learning curve...

Spying is "in the game" just like dive bombing B-24's.

If we weren't supposed to spy, there would be game mechanisms to prevent it.

Spying is good. It's all good.

If the game allows it, it is good.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

When did you start playing the game again Hubs?  Just curious.  Yes, AH has people who spy!

Oh, the horror (not to be confused with honor)!!  That also means they probably  have two accounts!!!  That probably means they vulch themselves to get points!!!!

I guess it takes all kinds.  I sometimes regret having played AW before AH.  It sounds like some people are having a real blast with this game!  Oh, wait... there were spies even in AW!  What a quandary!

Let em spy.
I dont care.

A properly planned and executed mission cant be stopped because of a spy.

A properly planned and exicuted can be stopped by people paying attention to whats going on.
But if Planned and executed properly are much tougher to stop even without a horde even if people do spot and try to stop it.

The vast majority of failed missions fail not because of spies. But because , Poor planning (the most common reason) and poor execution. And sometimes just plain old poor luck.
