BINGO!
There are really only two things spying can accomplish that looking at the map cant.
Revealing the location of a captured CV. (I've always felt you should be using it and not hiding it)
Revealing Info on NOE missions. And with most NOE missions they can be spotted on the map long before they ever reach their targets.
so really that only leaves 1 and only sometimes the second.
I do it all the time Simply by paying attention to the map.
Here's is often what I see to tip me off of an NOE mission.
I see a dar bar upping at what is normally an insignificant (at the moment)base. That darbar suddenly disappears or appears, disappears and appears and disappears over again a few times.
This tells me something is upping from that base as the planes up they appear on dar for a breif moment then that dar goes away as they get back down under dar.
So I start looking at the map at what might be a likely target.
Most of the thinking here strat wise is pretty simplistic and one dimensional so its usually not hard to narrow down the likely bases to one or two. Then I start watching the map for other telltale signs.
Invariably someone will either screw up and pop up on dar briefly or I notice things like Facilities flashing with no darbar showing in their sector.
Now This will make me even more curious and also tells me the general heading of those under dar planes and I will radio out about a potential attack inbound on such and such a base.
From that point if in range to accomplish it in time I will head my flight to the area to invstigate and look for cons which usually bcause of their size, show up quite nicely against the water or ground even at long distances.
Remember if your in a large mass, your going to be easier to spot then a lone plane (me) Therefore I am often able to see you. without you seeing me.
Having been part of missions I know that people in them are often running their mouths more then paying attention and looking out for potential enemy dots. And even if the dots are spotted often people show poor radio dicipline and are talking so much about non mission stuff that the person who spotted it cant get a word in edgewise to let anyone know
Once spotted I will send out a warning on radio about the impending attack and either get closer to see if I can make out the general force composition and possibly attack it or I wont and simply head parallel with it radioing out its current heading and try to nail as many as I can while they are attacking using my alt to my advantage
Other missions are so slow to develop because of force composition and alt requirements of the planner they might as well announce on 200 where they are headed.
They are more then obvious. Your not going to make an above dar attack and not have it noticed unless your on the fringes of the map where there isnt alot of activity. And all it takes is one person to spot you well before you reach your target to radio out your current location, alt and heading to screw up your plans.
If your not attacked in route on above dar runs. Its not because the spies failed and you were successful in keeping it a secret. its because people didnt feel like stopping what they were doing to go after you until it was too late.
And on under dar runs its usually because nobody was paying attention to oddities on the map.Or because you actually ran a decent plan. Not because the spies didn't succeeed.
