Useles or ok for AH ?
« on: April 14, 2006, 09:11:07 AM »
ok, so the old pc is dead r.i.p.

Found one brand PC that is not too expencive:
Pavilion t3359.fi
- AMD Athlon™ 64 3400+
- ATI RADEON® XPRESS 200 MOBO chip set
- 1 GB DDR-SDRAM
- 250 GB SATA 7200RPM
- LAN & WLAN
- Integrated 5.1 sound
EDIT > - GeForce 6600 wih 256 MB memory
The card is 6600 not 6200

It is not the best PC around but the price is nice.

But will it run AH2 at goof FPS ?

I think this is a bit better than my old PC that was :
- AMD Athlon 2800XP
- 512 MB
- 250 ATA
- Sound Blaster Audigy 2
- GeForce FX 5950 Ultra 256 MB

So the new HP sould be faster I think. But will it be fast enough?

Integrated vid is bad. If that pc has a pci-e slot also it might be ok. Also if you can upgrade the power supply might have to be upgraded also. Now here is the problem some of those power supplies are proprietary.
Now was your old pc also a name brand or a clone. If it is a standard atx case utilize the case and upgrade the the mobo, cpu, psu, and vid card.
 You will get more bang for the $ this way.

The old pc was a clone, and now when I have bought and killed three MOBO's, I have decided NOT to use any of the old components.

I dont know what kills the MOBO's, but I have spent enough money on the old PC now.

The vid card is not integrated I think. It is PCI-E and I have writen wrong model. It is a GeForce 6600 not 6200 :rolleyes:

6600 is just fine for AH IMO. Having just bought a rack box as a fill in I'm actually a bit impressed. It's actually an OEM ASUS MB with good Memory....the PS is low watt....but actually is awful good spec wise. I've built every gaming box I've had since 1993 (when I "found" AW)....can you get a box  as good as you can build....no way....but....

The 3500+ venice core cpu is still $209 at fry's
case is good quality toolless design ($50){PS included}
litescribe dual layer dvd (i wouldnt have bought litescribe but is kind of neat) {$40}
windows MC 2005 {$130}
200gig sata drive {$100}
939 MB {$75}[is a OEM board so you cant really find it]
1 gig PC3200 DDR {$90}

So basically its a ~$630 set of parts which are all fine....even MB is not bad 9within its limitations. Now the thing is dead quite and runs very cool.

It runs AH {offline in tower}[1024 textures,1024x768res all at default] at 47 out front of tower window.....32 fps sitting in P-51 cockpit on runway.

I've got a 7900GT en route but will fire it up as is on my 37 in lcd out of curiousity before I swap out.

Now I bought it since I got an HPv17e as well....for $639 out the door after rebate. Basically I'll put a fanless 6600 in it and use it as a HTPC once I build out....but all in all it seems to be pretty decent....suprisingly so....

Humble I now use  athlon 64 3000 with 6600 gt, and gig of rosewill 3200 ddr sdram.

Offline trinity a1 tower, 512 texture, 1024x 768, Sliders 7/8 to the left.
looking out front tower clipboard up 44 .... clipboard down 84
NE runway clipboard up 38 .... clipboard down 71.

Still think its better to toss everything but the case and start fresh.
I don't like all the crap that is installed in an off the rack pc.

PS      6600 GT  has faster ram than regular 6600 cards.

I have a GF6600 AGP on mine and it runs AH2 at 1280x1024 and full skins on 512 resolution with no problem. about 40 FPS average.

It was cheap and works fantastic.

(For reference film speed in movies runs at 26fps)

The specs listed should be fine for AH as far as I can tell.

Yeah but brand computers come often loaded with useless preinstalled apps that destroy performance. Ati 200 chipset is one of the weakest chipsets you can find today albeit cheap.

But if guarantee is worth paying premium for underspec box, what can I say. :huh

Curious how you come by that opinion, so far the ATI 200 is awful impressive....now the NV6150 is better due to the purevideo capability. But simply as a VC option the thing is not bad. I've built a bunch of systems....my last clocked 5%+ over anything listed at toms etc on all benchmarks for that card with modest OC and I couldnt build anything this good for the money. Components are all good

3500+ venice gore
top shelf sata drive
good memory
namebrand MB

To get a XPMC box that will run AH at ~40/FPS at 1024 tex for about $400 ($639 including 8ms 17in HP LCD) is pretty damm good. Now the 1st thing I did is order a 7900GT....so I agree its not a "quality" gaming box....but its just fine for the money...you couldnt build a better box for $400....
