They all have a releases here and there with problems, which are then fixed in a day or two. The last one that was a problem for Norton, about one month ago, was a severe vulnerability to exploits that could show up via e-mail. The lesser-known antivirus programs likely have just as many occasional bugs, but they don't have enough market share for the media to bother finding out about it and writing articles about it.

Personally I like my Trend Micro PC-cillin...
Its easy to use, reasonably priced, and offers great protection.

I also use Trend Micro PC-cillin and have for two years with zero complaints, but I will probably go to AVG when my next subscription expires in June just because of the price.

Norton is a over-programmed lead weight resource hog. It's become rediculous. IMO ;-)

I would personally never use Norton software on any gaming machine, or wireless network. If you use Linksy's routers the first thing a tech will do is tell you to remove it, not disable this or that, remove it completely.
Mcafee is better then norton, but again, for a gaming machine it's stil a bit of a resource hog. I'd turn any and all off while gaming anyway

There are plenty of free programs out there that work just as well, if not better. AVG is a good example.

vcom's Fixit utilities for 4 yrs now .

fixit 5 is expiring this month and im grabin fix it 6

bolth 4 and 5 never messed with my gameplay at all , they use trendmicro deffinition files ,and have tons of great little programs in it for troubleshooting , tuning, stress testing hardware, registry edit/defrag, and other goodies .
well worth the 29.00-39.00 investment and you can use it on all your pc's without having to buy more then one or multi lic's.

its saved me hundreds of times .

that along with adaware and hijack this .. its a great combo

I'll update this info when i get fixit 6 next week .

I relied on Norton virus protection via SystemWorks for years until release ... 2003 I think, or maybe 2004.

My older SystemWorks virus protection was running out of support from Norton, so before buying the latest version I fortunately did a lot research on the Internet. I found so many complaints about Norton SystemWorks that I switched to McAfee (free with AOL) and have been happy with that for several years.

I disagree that McAfee is really the better one.

My experiance:
It would not program to update as specified in the program. It would randomly update no matter what I set in the preferances.

It would reset the registry after an update. I had to prune it more than once as it repeated the same settings and slowed the system down running the program multiple times even without a scan in progress.

It seemed to be remarkably transparent to infections. I would have to run a scan more than once to find the infections.

Doing an uninstall did not remove the program. It stayed hidden then appeared again after a few reboots.

Tech support was neither helpful nor easy to deal with.

On free av I prefer avast as it has also spyware protection features.

Paid side Nod32 is the best.

As I talked about previously, I've used McAfee and Norton over the years depending on which is least obnoxious. I judged McAfee least obnoxious currently, but really, I don't like either that much. They are either too bloated (causing long boot times or long times to launch Outlook -- as is the case right now with McAfee for me) or too obnoxious (pop ups all the freaking time when I really just want it to shut up and do its thing without bombing me out of whatever full-screen app I might be in at the moment -- as is the case with Norton).

I currently am trying Avast. With Avast (compared to McAfee), my computer boots MUCH more quickly and Outlook launches MUCH more quickly. Avast happens to be free, which is a plus.

AVAST

It has an interesting option to scan at boot, just like how the checkdisk on c: works. It scans for viruses before the GUI loads.

Seems like a very smart funktion.

Have not noticed any problems whit avast. For firewall I use the XP plus router (linux box).

And oh yeah, it is FREE

ESET NOD32 is the best out of the several I have used; ( I've used pc-cillin, norton, panda, mcaffee,avg etc. ) it is quiet & in the background, updates frequently (everyday) & isn't a system hog. There is one that just came out in the US recently called Bit-Defender that's supposed to be good too. But I just can't say enough good things about NOD32...it's the perfect AV prog.
