Thinking about convergence, it occurs to me that I'm not really sure how AH reports ranges.

Here's my question: when AH changes the range from 400 to 200, does it mean:

that the range has just crossed from 201 to 200, or

does it mean that the range has moved from 300 to 299 ( ie the range is rounded to the nearest reported value, of the set 200, 400, 600, 800.... )?

The answer would have an obvious impact on trying to use convergence to its maximum effect.

I got the following numbers from some thread in the general discussion a while ago (might have been a year or two..) but I didn't find the thread now with a quick search - I tried "range" and user name "hitech" as search terms. I hope these still are correct.

700 to 899 as 800

500 to 699 as 600

300 to 499 as 400

100 to 299 as 200

Another thing you need to know:

When the icon shows d200, that means your target is between 200 and 399 yards away from you. D400 means 400 to 599 yards.

So....who is correct?

I'd go with Hitech...

and it occurs to me that offline drone work supports the hitech explanation. When range goes to "0" offline, it does so well before collision -- so it HAS to be rounding!

I thought i was correct on this, but if im proven wrong i learned something new. Theres no doubt Hitechs information being more accurate then mine - I apologize for spreading misinformation.

Id guess one could "test" this on the offline drones. When they are friendly, the distances are more detailed.

Take screenshots and compare sizes of the planes.

Had no idea! So the range counter is always to be read as range XXX+/-100???

Thought it was such that when bogie crosses 200 it turns 200.....Now i gotta remember when it just turns from 400 to 200 hes just crossed 300;)

I suggest using the film viewer. It reads range accurately. So simply pause the film when range changes from 400 to 200 and see what the actual range is. What do you think?

Just checked it. Bogy changed from 800 to 600 at d700 on the film viewer.

always make sure to remember that the numbers are in yards also. not feet.

Yes. Which is why a target thats at icon distance 1.000 (yards) straight atop you has 3.000 feet alt on you....
